🧗‍♂️🧡 Vertical Rescue Training – Skills That Save Lives 💪

This week our NSW SES team took things to new heights - literally - with a Vertical Rescue training session.

Our volunteers stepped up to learn skills including:

• 🧗‍♀️ Rope systems and safe rigging
• 🔗 Anchors, knots and load management
• 🪢 Setting up and operating lowering and hauling systems
• 🛠️ Harness use and personal safety equipment
• 🤝 Team communication and controlled movement on steep or vertical terrain

These skills are vital during accidents, remote rescues and any situation where someone needs help in a hard to reach place.

🌧️🧡 A Big Congratulations to Our New Storm Ready Volunteers! 💪

We celebrate our newest group of NSW SES volunteers who have officially completed their Storm Ground and Heights training.

Over the past number of weeks they’ve learned the core skills that keep our community safe during wild weather, including:

• 🪜 Ladder safety
• 🧡 How to get onto a roof safely
• 🟧 Anchors, ropes and harness systems for working at height
• 🌧️ Tarping damaged roofs
• 🧱 Using sandbags effectively
• 🔧 Plus so much more - a whole range of other storm response essentials

Every single one stepped up with courage, teamwork and determination. They’ve asked questions, practised hard, supported each other, and shown exactly the kind of spirit that makes our orange family so strong.

👏 We’re incredibly proud of this crew and excited to see them grow in their NSW SES journey.

If you’ve ever thought about joining, now’s a great time to reach out. There’s a place for everyone — and we’d love to welcome you - https://www.ses.nsw.gov.au/volunteer

⚠️ Detailed Severe Thunderstorm Warning ⚠️

for DAMAGING WINDS and HEAVY RAINFALL

for DAMAGING WINDS and HEAVY RAINFALL ⛈️🍃⛈️🍃

📍parts of Wollondilly/Wingecarribee area.

Issued at 2:07 pm EST on Saturday 3 October 2026

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 2:05 pm, a severe thunderstorm likely to produce damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding was detected near Bundanoon and the area west of Berrima. This thunderstorm is moving towards the southeast. It is forecast to affect Bowral, Nowra and Moss Vale by 2:35 pm and Kiama, Gerringong and Jamberoo by 3:05 pm.

🟧⬜️🟧 The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
* Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks.
* After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides.
* Unplug computers and appliances.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.

🟧 MEET YOUR LOCAL CANYONLEIGH SES CFR TEAM 🟧

When you call Triple Zero (000), sometimes we arrive before the ambulance, and here’s why.

We are your Community First Responders (CFRs) and we are specially trained NSW SES volunteers who are activated by NSW Ambulance to provide immediate, life‑saving care when an ambulance is still on its way.

🚑⚡We’re here to:

• Start first aid and early interventions that make a critical difference;
• Support patients and families during those first minutes that feel the longest;
• Stabilise the scene until paramedics arrive;
• Work alongside NSW Ambulance as part of a coordinated emergency response

We’re not a replacement for paramedics — we’re the trained community link that bridges the gap between your call for help and the arrival of advanced care.

💛Our CFR team is made up of dedicated NSW SES volunteers from your own community.

Meet your Canyonleigh locals; Luke, Rochelle, Albert, Jo and Clair, we are parents, tradies, professionals, retirees — we are trained ordinary people who will do what's necessary when every second counts. ⏱️

🧡So if you see our NSW SES vehicles at a medical emergency, know this:

We’re there because help was needed fast, and we’re proud to stand beside NSW Ambulance to make sure you’re never alone in those first crucial moments.

🟧 Your safety and wellbeing is our priority. Our community is at heart 💝
