Sometimes the child who seems “naughty” at the end of the day is not being difficult on purpose. They may simply be exhausted.
Tired children can look restless, tearful, angry, silly, defiant or unable to listen. Small things can feel huge. Waiting feels impossible. Homework takes twice as long. A normal request can end in tears.
Sleep affects mood, focus, patience and the ability to cope with everyday stress. When children are overtired, their bodies can seem “wired” rather than sleepy, which can make bedtime even harder.
It will not be the reason for every meltdown. But it is worth asking: “Could they be tired?” before assuming they are choosing to misbehave.
A calmer evening, a predictable routine, less stimulation before bed and a fairly regular wake-up time can make a real difference. Sometimes children need consequences. Sometimes they need connection, food, quiet and sleep. Often, they need us to notice the difference.
