Our 2/3s couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day to visit Brisbane City as part of their Brisbane Now and Then Excursion last Wednesday πŸŒžπŸ’›

Built by convicts and Queensland’s oldest building, our first stop on the itinerary was The Old Windmill. After a short walk to Roma Street Parkland, we had a quick play and a bite to eat before our groups explored 🌿🧺 We saw beautiful gardens, majestic trees, cacti and even some veggies growing πŸ₯•πŸŒ΅ There were lizards, ducks, native bees and even a snake! πŸ¦ŽπŸ¦†πŸπŸ

We then took off to Brisbane City Hall where our cohort separated into their classes for our activities πŸ›οΈ As part of the City Hall Tour, we learnt about how City Hall was built, explored the amazing architectural features (including inside the main auditorium!) and toured King George Square. Through a hands-on workshop, we explored toys and technology objects from the past and compared them to what we use today πŸŽ²πŸ“±

At the Museum of Brisbane, we learnt about the significant people, places and moments in Brisbane’s history, including the connections local Aboriginal groups hold to Country πŸ€πŸ’™

Finally, we visited the Warrajamba Exhibit by Quandamooka artist Delvene Cockatoo-Collins, Artist in Residence. Getting hands-on creating our own mermaids and dugongs πŸ§œβ€β™€οΈπŸ’ was a wonderful way to finish National Reconciliation Week.

Our visit to Brisbane City helped our learning come to life ✨ We know so much more about the special places and history of our city.

A big thank you to Jess and the Team at the Museum of Brisbane, and our amazing teachers, teacher aide, preservice teachers and parent/grandparent helpers for making the day possible πŸ’πŸ‘

National Reconciliation Week celebrations wrapped up on Wednesday, June 3rd with Mabo Day πŸ’›πŸ’šπŸ–€

NRW is a special time for us all to celebrate and learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

As part of our celebrations, our classes explored the significance of Reconciliation Week, engaged in class discussion, and created a class artwork to contribute to our whole artwork display 🎨✨

Reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples, for the benefit of all Australians. We have begun our journey to reconciliation as a school, and we are so proud of the steps we are taking together.

This year we have formed a First Nations Team, and this week we finalised the first draft of our Reconciliation Action Plan πŸ‘

At MGESS, we’re all in for reconciliation. ❀️

πŸ’™ It’s Chaplaincy Week! πŸ’™

This week, we’re celebrating the incredible impact school chaplaincy has in supporting students, families, and our wider community.

At Mount Gravatt East State School, our chaplain, Chappy Isaac, provides a caring and consistent presence through mentoring, lunchtime programs, and emotional support for students who need it most.

We’re proud to support this important work and are encouraging our community to get behind the β€œChampion Your Chappy” fundraiser this week. Every contribution helps ensure this valuable support continues.

If you’re able to give, share, or show your support, it truly makes a difference πŸ’š
