As we wake on this Magic Mudgee morning we will see our town start to change colour to a bright Pink. Every year in October we celebrate pinkupmudgee in support of the McGrath Foundation.

The work that the mcgrathfoundation has done over the many years has helped lots of families fighting this terrible disease in Mudgee and our firefighting family is no different. We have jumped on board again this year and pinked up too. If you can jump in and help support pinkupmudgee please do.

You may have seen this semi-trailer parked outside our fire station in the last few days.

This truck known as BAHS1 is a firefighter training simulator, with crews from 387 Mudgee refreshing our skills on Wednesday night.

The night began with a recertification in use of the Altair gas detector, which we use in a range of jobs, from fires to hazmat jobs to check if the air is safe.

We then underwent recertification in the use of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA or BA).

Part of this was a refresher in the correct tests and procedures in BA use, before crews in pairs too turns in a scenario in the BA truck.

Crews were tasked to enter the 'smoke filled' room that is setup and gain fire control, before conducting a search and rescue.

With limited visibility, crews located the first casulty, removing them to safety, and were then further tasked to enter and conduct a count of how many other casualties we could locate.

We won't post the answer here, as we don't want to give it away to other stations.

Scenarios like this ensure we receive the most realistic training we can receive and be prepared for anything.

Just after 6pm last night Fire and Rescue NSW Station 387 Mudgee and Fire and Rescue NSW Station 312 Gulgong firefighters were called to our second house fire in less than 24 hours.

Upon arrival our firefighters were met by the occupants of the house who had self evacuated with embers visible from the roof of the house. The occupants reported that they had embers coming out of the top of their chimney and some had landed inside the fireplace surround.

Firefighters extinguished the fire within the fireplace and fire burning within the chimney.

Firefighters were able to check for fire extension using a thermal imaging camera and confirmed that the fire was confined to the fireplace and brick chimney.

Atmospheric monitoring was completed following the use of a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear the house of residual smoke caused from the fire and the house was handed back to occupants.

As we often find the occupants were unsure if they did the right thing by calling 000 because they didn’t want to disturb us. We assured them that they had taken the right steps and should never feel that anyone is disturbing us. We encourage everyone to Call 000 immediately if are alerted by your smoke alarm or if you have a concern because we don’t want to arrive when it’s too late.

As the cooler weather starts to set in we remind everyone that Winter fire safety is extremely important and that the five minutes it takes to check your home can prove invaluable. If you are after some Winter fire safety information head to our website and check out our page in Winter Fire Safety.

Smoke alarm saves occupants.

Just before 4am this morning firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 387 Mudgee and Fire and Rescue NSW Station 312 Gulgong were called to a house fire in Mudgee.

Upon arrival firefighters were met by the occupants who had evacuated upon hearing the smoke alarm operate only minutes earlier.

The smoke alarm alerted the occupants to a fire that was burning above the fireplace in the residence. The occupants were able to act quickly and extinguish the fire prior to firefighters arriving.

Our crews were then able to check the surrounding area using Thermal Imaging Cameras and Atmospheric Monitoring equipment to make sure that the fire was completely out and that no further fire extension had occurred.

The occupants were thankful that a working smoke alarm was able to wake them and alert them to the fire before it was able to take hold.

This is just another reminder that everyone should have at least 1 working smoke alarm and If you haven’t checked your smoke alarm, do it TODAY. If you need assistance to check your smoke alarm or would like to have our firefighters visit to help with fire safety in your home register for our free home fire safety visits by clicking this link https://www.fire.nsw.gov.au/fire-safety/home-fire-safety/safety-visits
