Today, on Malaya and Borneo Veterans’ Day, we honour the Australians who served in the Malayan Emergency, Thai-Malay border operations and the Indonesian Confrontation during the 1950s and 1960s.

Thousands of Australians served across the Malay Peninsula, Borneo and the surrounding seas and skies, alongside Commonwealth and allied forces.

Across these campaigns, 62 Australians lost their lives, while many others were wounded, injured or medically evacuated as a result of their service.

Today, we remember their courage, service and sacrifice, and acknowledge all veterans of these campaigns and those whose lives were forever shaped by their service.

Lest we forget.

Today marks 64 years since the arrival of the first Australian troops in Vietnam.

On 3 August 1962, 30 members of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) arrived in Saigon in response to a request for assistance from the former Republic of Vietnam government.

The AATTV were at the forefront of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. They numbered more than 200 members by 1971 and served in many of the war’s major battles.

On the anniversary of their arrival in Vietnam, we commend the courage of the AATTV and all Australian servicemen and women who served in the Vietnam War.

On 19 July 1916, Australian soldiers faced a major battle on the Western Front at Fromelles.

In the space of just 24 hours, more than 5,500 Australians became casualties, with almost 2,000 killed or dying of wounds. It remains one of the darkest days in Australia's military history and the greatest loss suffered by a single Australian division in a single day.

Today, we pause to remember the courage, sacrifice and endurance of those who fought at Fromelles, many of them young, inexperienced soldiers facing the unimaginable realities of war for the first time.

We also remember those with no known grave, whose names are honoured at VC Corner Cemetery, and all who continue to carry the legacy of their service.

Lest we forget.
