NSW SES Murwillumbah Unit New South Wales State Emergency Service Murwillumbah Unit It is made up almost entirely of volunteers, with 229 units located throughout the state.

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is an emergency, preparedness and response service dedicated to assisting the community of NSW. The units comprise of approximately 10,000 volunteer members, who are easily identified by their distinctive orange overalls. While our core responsibilities are for flood, storm and tsunami operations, the NSW SES also provides support to general rescue efforts in the State. This includes Road Crash Rescue (RCR), Vertical Rescue (VR), Urban Search and Rescue (USAR), evidence searches (both metropolitan and rural) and other forms of specialist rescue that may be required due to local threats. Volunteers in a number of isolated communities have also been trained as Community First Responders by the Ambulance Service of New South Wales. The Service's trained rescuers also support the full-time emergency services during major disasters. The NSW SES assists other emergency services when they are performing major operations. These services include the NSW Police Force, the NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW and the Ambulance Service of NSW. The NSW SES also partners with local communities through Community Engagement programs like FloodSafe, StormSafe and TsunamiSafe. These programs are supported by strategies and resources, are delivered locally through a range of activities and events and are a priority for the NSW SES. The aim is to engage at-risk communities on preparedness, response and recovery measures so that there is no loss of life and impacts caused by these events are minimised. This in turn builds community resilience to floods, storms and tsunami. For further information visit the NSW SES website at http://www.ses.nsw.gov.au/

Today marked an exciting milestone for our Murwillumbah SES Unit, as we welcomed NSW Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib MP and Reece Byrnes - Mayor of Tweed Shire along with representatives from Tweed Shire Council and Blaze Projects, to our new unit site on Old Lismore Road.

We officially turned the first sod, marking the commencement of construction on our new purpose-built unit, which has been jointly funded by the NSW Government and Tweed Shire Council.

We were also excited to welcome the arrival of our new Unimog, which will be a valuable addition to our unit and enhance our capability to support our community during floods, storms and other emergencies.

We look forward to watching our new home take shape over the coming months.

Don’t forget to set your clocks forward one hour tonight as daylight saving begins.

As we head into the long weekend and school holidays, make sure you’re prepared for changing weather, whether you’re at home or heading away.

Keep up to date with weather warnings by monitoring the Hazards Near Me NSW app and take some time to prepare your home before the next storm.

October can bring an increased risk of thunderstorms, so choose a few simple jobs you can get done around your home this long weekend:

✅ Spend 10 minutes clearing leaves and debris from gutters, downpipes and drains
✅ Check your yard or balcony and secure loose outdoor items
✅ Check for trees or branches that may need trimming
✅ Check your roof for signs of damage or leaks
✅ Take a few minutes to review your insurance policy
✅ Make or update your household emergency plan
✅ Put together or check your emergency kit
✅ Download the Hazards Near Me NSW app

You don’t need to do everything at once. Choose a time, choose a task and start preparing before the next storm.

Stay ahead of the storm. Prepare early.

Congratulations to our two Murwillumbah SES members, Mundy and Zack, who recently travelled down to Penrith to complete their Flood Rescue Land Based Course.

The course develops the skills required to safely undertake land based rescues and recoveries in swiftwater and floodwater environments, working as part of a specialist rescue team.

Their training included hazard assessment, rescue planning, team communication, using rescue equipment, casualty recovery and packaging, and self rescue skills in moving water.

Congratulations Mundy and Zack on completing your course. The knowledge and practical skills you’ve gained through this training are a valuable asset to our Murwillumbah SES Unit and strengthen our ability to support our community when needed.

It’s exciting to see our new Murwillumbah SES headquarters featured in Tweed Shire Council's weekly newpaper this week.

Construction is now underway on our new home on Old Lismore Road, with our volunteers set to move into the new facility in early 2027.

A very exciting new chapter for Murwillumbah SES and we can’t wait to see it take shape!

Training doesn’t stop when the sun goes down!

Last night, our Murwillumbah Unit volunteers headed out on the river for a nighttime water search exercise.

Using Caltopo, the team searched designated points of interest within an allocated area, from Condong Boat Ramp to Murwillumbah Bridge, working to locate a heavy, wet and muddy training mannequin.

The exercise was a great opportunity to practice wayfinding in the dark, navigating around river debris and working safely in low light conditions.

Our team also practiced reporting findings back to the land search base using the correct communications procedures, helping build the skills and confidence needed when working alongside NSW Police during a real water search.

It was great to get the boats out on the water, put our training into practice and strengthen the teamwork that is so important in emergency response.
