It’s funny how things never change, we did the same to the Asian’s in the 1980s and now the middle Easterners turn ..

During the 1950s, the large influx of Italian immigrants into Australia triggered a fierce racist backlash from the Anglo‑Celtic majority, who feared their arrival would dilute the nation’s British identity. Media outlets sensationalised myths about the “Mafia” and the “Black Hand,” painting Italian men as volatile, knife‑wielding criminals, while hardline Protestant groups weaponised sectarian fears about “Roman Catholicism,” warning that Southern Europeans would “popify” the country and form a Vatican‑controlled voting bloc. Under the pressures of the White Australia Policy, Italians endured slurs, exclusion, and social contempt — even within families where marrying an Italian was seen as a disgrace — all while their labour was essential in rebuilding Australia’s post‑war infrastructure. It was a cycle of prejudice that lingered for decades, long after Italians had become an integral part of the nation’s cultural fabric
