💢 Just because you can buy an e-bike, doesn't mean it's legal to use on public roads 💢

On Saturday 23 May 2026, police from the Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol were called out to a collision between a car and e-bike rider in Keysborough.

The rider of the e-bike, being a 17-year-old male, had been travelling along Corrigan Road during the night, wearing dark clothing and using a heavily illegal e-bike.

The rider suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital by Ambulance.

Upon further inspection of the bike, police determined that it was capable of travelling at speeds up to 100 KM/H.

After spending close to $8,000 on this bike, the rider will now face over $1,200 in fines for using it on public roads alongside being liable for costs associated with the damage he caused to the other vehicle.

A reminder to all of those who use e-bikes that there are strict laws which dictate what is not allowed to be used on public roads:
🚫 Any e-bike which doesn't require pedalling for propulsion
🚫 Any e-bike which is capable of travelling more than 25 KM/H
🚫 Any e-bike which has a power capacity of more than 200 watts
🚫 Any e-bike which has an internal combustion engine

If your e-bike meets any of the above points, it is now defined as a motorcycle which would result in the rider committing multiple offences.
