β€˜You can be serious and comment on moral dilemmas of our times, but also find comedy in everything.’ Andrew O'Hagan on writing contemporary life.

Last night the festival welcomed Andrew O'Hagan all the way from Scotland for a sold-out event at Newcastle City Library. The wide-ranging discussion with Rosemarie Milsom featured a laugh a minute, as O'Hagan shared the stories behind his most ambitious novel to date, Caledonian Road.

Thank you to Andrew and Rosemarie, everyone who joined us for the event, our wonderful volunteers, and festival bookshop, MacLean's Booksellers. This event was presented in partnership with Brisbane Writers Festival and Newcastle Libraries, and supported by the NSW government through Create NSW, as well as Fourth Wave W**e and Allen & Unwin Books.

Video description: A series of clips captured at the event, including the view of Civic Park and City Hall from the library, the entrance to the library, Andrew and Rosemarie in conversation and people getting their books signed by Andrew following the event.

Story Dogs is coming to Newcastle City Library! πŸΆπŸ“šπŸ₯³

We’re proud to partner with Story Dogs Australia to provide this unique 4-week program for primary school-aged children to practice reading in a calm, positive space.

In each session, your child reads one-on-one with accredited Story Dogs volunteer Bren and her dog Wilma. There is no pressure to perform and no judgement if they make a mistake, just time, encouragement and a friendly dog happy to listen.

By making reading feel safe and enjoyable, Story Dogs helps children practice at their own pace, grow in confidence and see themselves as readers.
