Last week, the Newcastle Herald reported that while the Mater hospital's public- private partnership (PPP) i on the brink of collapse, the Minns government is sitting on their hands, with no clear picture of how they will respond to inquiry findings.

They've also sat on documents related to workplace issues at Westpac Rescue Helicopter for three weeks, despite saying just the week before they hadn't received them.

These issues show that public-private partnerships continue to let communities and workers down.

The Hunter and Newcastle deserve so much better.

Thank you Dr Amanda Cohn for continuing to shine a light on the failures of privatisation.

The reports regarding allegations of inappropriate conduct by Senator Jordan Steele-John have led to careful reflection within our local group on who we are as a community.

Jordan Steele-John denies the allegations and is entitled to an investigation of the allegations raised. The Newcastle Greens will refrain from making any further comments on the investigation to avoid potential to negatively impact the independence of the investigation.

As a party we have an obligation to ensure victim-survivors of sexual violence are believed if they choose to speak, we stand with them and support their need to be heard.

The Newcastle Greens commit to a culture of safe disclosure, of saying the hard part out loud, and of care and support for victim-survivors. Most importantly, a culture of calling out and dealing with harmful behaviour, including when it arises within our movement and regardless of who commits it.

There is no excuse for unsafe behaviours. There are no circumstances, personal or otherwise, that absolve bad behaviours. We truly want to fight for justice for survivors, and so we must hold everyone to the same standard and level of accountability, even those within our own movement.

We have redistributed our complaints policy to our members, along with support options to help them through this difficult time. We will continue to listen to and care for the people who make our movement strong.

Burning household garbage isn't the solution to landfills rapidly filling up. They pollute air and soil, have uncertain long term impacts on our health, and rely on a constant feedstock of garbage for decades to be viable, undermining progress toward a circular economy.

I'm proud that this inquiry also examined the genuine alternatives to reduce residual waste thanks to an amendment by the Greens - things like making producers responsible for the waste they produce rather than individuals, households, and councils, and stronger regulation on product design and packaging to support use of recycled material, repairability, and more.

Coming up on council đź’š

At our Ordinary council meeting on Tuesday night we'll be discussing a range of important issues, including asking Council to reiterate our opposition to a nuclear submarine base in Newcastle.

We'll also be discussing the impact that the bird flu crisis is having in our town, and on our wildlife carers including that the NSW Govt is not providing any financial support to wildlife carers for the bird flu response.

You can join us online or in the chamber from 6pm to hear our discussions.
