🌿🌈 WHAT’S REALLY IN YOUR MEDICINAL CANNABIS? 👀
Okay Nimbin… this one is worth a little look 👀🍃
We all know cannabis is a plant. A very complex plant. Cannabinoids. Terpenes. Flavonoids. Oils. Aromas. All sorts of naturally occurring compounds working together in ways scientists are still learning about.
But here’s where things get interesting…
🌱 The cannabis plant goes into a commercial production system. It can be grown, processed, extracted, filtered, formulated, packaged and stored before it ever reaches a patient.
So what’s actually in that bottle, capsule or flower? And do you REALLY know?
Now before anyone jumps in…
I’m not saying medicinal cannabis is secretly being filled with mystery chemicals.
There are rules.
The TGA says medicinal cannabis products must meet quality requirements and must not contain undeclared substances. Products are also tested for things like pesticides, heavy metals, mould toxins and other contaminants.
BUT…
Here’s the bit that might surprise you 👀
Most medicinal cannabis products supplied in Australia are classed as UNAPPROVED therapeutic goods.
That doesn’t mean they’re illegal. It means the individual product has not gone through the same TGA assessment for safety, quality and effectiveness as an approved medicine.
🤔 So maybe the question isn’t…
“Is cannabis medicine?”
Maybe we have already moved past that conversation.
Maybe the question now is…
🌿 WHAT EXACTLY ARE WE BEING GIVEN?
Where was it grown? What was it treated with? How was it processed? What extraction method was used? What contaminants were tested for? Are there ingredients other than cannabis? And can patients actually see the testing results?
Because there is a BIG difference between knowing you are taking cannabis… and knowing exactly what is in the final product.
And here’s where I think Nimbin has something pretty important to say.
We have been talking about this plant for decades. We have watched it go from something people were arrested for possessing… to something doctors can prescribe.
That’s one hell of a journey. 🌿
But if cannabis has entered the medical system, shouldn’t transparency come with it?
Shouldn’t people be able to ask questions?
Shouldn’t patients know what’s in their medicine?
And shouldn’t we be curious about what happens to this beautiful plant between the soil 🌱 and the medicine cabinet?
Maybe it’s time to stop asking whether cannabis is medicine…
…and start asking
🌿 WHAT HAPPENS TO THE PLANT ALONG THE WAY?
Now THAT is a conversation Nimbin knows how to have 🌈💚🌈
What do you reckon?
Do you know exactly what is in the medicinal cannabis you’re taking?
