How to distinguish between visual tags and eID device? ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ

If you donโ€™t have an eID scanner, use the printed numbers to check if a device is electronic.

1๏ธโƒฃ A National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) eID device will have a 16-digit code starting with a PIC.
2๏ธโƒฃ A NLIS visual tag will have just the 8-digit PIC code.

If your sheep or goat already has an NLIS visual tag, leave it in and add an NLIS eID device.

Remember, an animal can have multiple NLIS visual tags, but only one eID.

From 1 January 2027, all sheep and goats of any age must have one NLIS eID device before they leave any property.

Breeder or post breeder tags? ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ

If you need to apply a National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) eID device to your stock, make sure you use the right one:

๐Ÿ“ Stock that are no longer on their property of birth need a pink post-breeder NLIS eID tag with their current PIC (or agistment PIC), unless they already have an NLIS eID. In that case, just update the NLIS database.
๐Ÿ“ Stock still on their property of birth can use a breeder NLIS eID in any colour except pink, matched to that property's PIC.

From 1 January 2027, all sheep and goats of any age must have one NLIS eID device before they leave any property.

Spring growth is booming, but whatโ€™s happening beneath the surface?

A wet and warm winter gave crops and pastures across the Murray region a great start, topping up soil moisture reserves along the way.

But with spring growth taking off, soil moisture levels are dropping fast!

Our Farming Forecaster soil probes are showing some significant changes:
๐Ÿ‘‰ 14 of 19 soil probes recorded moisture levels below 75% as of 1 October, compared to just six in early September.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Upper Murray and Savernake sites recorded soil moisture declines of 47% and 49% respectively during September.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Western Murray sites saw moisture reserves drop by 26โ€“54%, driven by strong crop and lucerne growth.

While winter provided a welcome boost, these results highlight just how quickly growing crops and pastures can draw down stored soil moisture.

Want to know whatโ€™s happening beneath your paddocks? Farming Forecaster is a free online tool providing access to soil moisture data and pasture forecasts to support on-farm decision-making.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Explore the data at www.farmingforecaster.com.au

Can productive farming and healthy waterways go hand in hand? Absolutely!

The NSW Government's Murray Local Land Services recently joined the Ricegrowers' Association of Australia and Murray Irrigation Limited to showcase how irrigation infrastructure, farming and environmental water can work together to deliver positive outcomes for our region. ๐ŸŒฑ

Representatives from the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water and the Murray-Darling Basin Authority visited several local projects, including:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Cockran Creek โ€“ Murray Irrigation Limitedโ€™s Restoring Murray Waterways project.
๐Ÿ‘‰ An on-farm wetland โ€“ supported by infrastructure works at Michael and Felicia Chalmersโ€™ property.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Wirra-Lo near Murrabit โ€“ a constructed wetland supporting threatened species.

The visit highlighted the importance of collaboration with farmers and local communities to deliver environmental water where it can make a difference, while supporting the productive irrigation systems that are vital to our region.

Hay season is here! Are you making the most of your cut?

With hay season well and truly underway, getting the timing and moisture levels right can make all the difference to the quality of your bales!

Here are a few tips to help you make quality hay this season ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐ŸŒฑ Timing is everything! Aim to cut between flowering and the water ripe stage to balance yield and feed quality.
โ˜€๏ธ Keep an eye on moisture. Check windrows regularly as they cure, aiming for 14โ€“16% moisture for large rectangular and round bales.
๐ŸŒพ Crisp, not brittle! Stems should crack and break cleanly when twisted, without losing valuable leaf matter.
๐ŸŒง๏ธ Watch the weather. If rain hits your cut hay, allow it to dry sufficiently before baling to reduce the risk of mould and spontaneous combustion.
๐Ÿ”ฌ Know what's in your bale! Once baled, feed quality testing can help you understand the nutritional value of your hay and how best to use it for livestock supplementation.

Did you know Local Land Services offers FREE feed quality testing? Contact your local office on 1300 795 299 to find out more.

๐Ÿข MURRAY RAMSAR SPECIES SPOTLIGHT: Eastern long-necked turtle

Meet the eastern long-necked turtle (Chelodina longicollis), also known as the Snake-necked Turtle.

Wemba Wemba name: turmi-mum

One of the fascinating species found across the NSW Central Murray Ramsar forests, the Eastern Long-neck is the most widespread freshwater turtle in south-eastern Australia.

๐ŸŒŠ Life in the wetlands: These turtles can make themselves at home in rivers, wetlands, farm dams, creeks and ponds. After rain, theyโ€™re also known to travel surprisingly long distances over land in search of new wetlands or suitable nesting areas.

๐Ÿฝ Whatโ€™s on the menu? Eastern Long-necks are carnivores, feeding on insects, yabbies, frogs and small fish. Theyโ€™ll also eat carrion, helping keep our waterways clean and healthy.

๐Ÿ‘€ Can you tell them apart? They can be confused with broad-shelled rurtles, but check underneath! Eastern long-necks have a broader underside with distinctive black markings, while broad-shelled turtles have a thinner underside without these markings.

๐Ÿคข Fun fact: If threatened, they can release a very foul-smelling liquid from scent glands near their upper legs. Definitely one to admire without getting too close!

โš ๏ธ A risky journey: Young turtles are particularly vulnerable to predators such as foxes as they make their way from nests to the water. In partnership with First Nations groups, fox control is being undertaken across these Ramsar wetlands to help improve turtle survival and support population recovery.

The Healing Country project is funded by the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust and delivered by the NSW Governmentโ€™s Murray Local Land Services, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel.
