The purpose of this page is to keep you up-to-date with North Rocks RFS

We are deeply saddened to hear the news overnight that an officer was killed in a motor vehicle crash. Our thoughts are with the officer’s family, friends, colleagues and all those affected.

So here's the question we want every North Rocks resident to ask themselves:

Yesterday we shared what happened before the Koolewong fire.

Today, we see what happened when the fire actually arrived.

For Elise, Paul and Chui Yin, the fire moved so quickly that they had only minutes to make life-saving decisions.

In fact, one of the biggest dangers can be thinking “it won't happen here.”

🔥 GET READY: BEFORE THE FIRE 🏠

Over the next three days, North Rocks Brigade is sharing three powerful stories from the Koolewong bush fire in December 2025.

Today’s story is about what happened before the fire arrived.

Elise, Paul and Chui Yin share how they prepared their homes, spoke with their families and thought about what they would do if a fire threatened their community.

And this is the part we want our North Rocks community to think about...

We might live in suburbia, but bush fire doesn't stop at the edge of the city. Many parts of our community sit close to bushland, grass, parks and open spaces.

Being prepared isn't something you do when you see smoke on the horizon.

It's the conversations you have now. It's understanding your risk, preparing your property and having a plan your family understands.

🚨 INCIDENT – BUSH FIRE 🚨

Earlier this morning, our brigade responded to reports of bush alight behind Fred Caterson Reserve at Baulkham Hills, assisting Fire + Rescue NSW.

On arrival, crews were faced with a small area of bush alight in a difficult-to-access location.

Due to the steep and challenging terrain, additional resources were requested to help crews safely access the fire front and begin knocking down the fire.

This incident is a timely reminder that although it is still only spring, the Bush Fire Danger Period for Greater Sydney is fast approaching. Now is a great time to prepare your property and make sure you and your family have a Bush Fire Survival Plan in place.

Are You Really OK?

Today is R U OK? Day.

As emergency workers, we’re pretty good at asking “Are you OK?”

We ask it when we arrive at an incident.
We ask it when someone’s had a rough call.
We ask it when a mate is quiet after a long night.

But sometimes the person who needs to hear it most is the one who says:

“I’m fine.”

Because behind every helmet, every uniform and every radio call is a person.

Someone who might have seen something they can’t unsee.
Someone who might be carrying the weight of a difficult job.
Someone who is tired, stressed, worried or simply having a bad day.

So today, don't just ask the question.

Look them in the eye. Ask again. Listen.

Check on your crew.
Check on your mate.
Check on the person who always checks on everyone else.

And don't wait for a bad call to do it.

Because sometimes the most important job we can do is look after each other.

🚨 EXTREME FIRE DANGER & TOTAL FIRE BAN - TODAY 🚨

Today, Saturday 5 September, the Greater Sydney Region, including The Hills, is forecast to experience an EXTREME Fire Danger Rating, with a Total Fire Ban in place.

This means conditions are dangerous and any fire that starts has the potential to spread quickly and be difficult to control.

🚫 No fires in the open
🚫 No activities that can cause a fire, including hot works such as welding, grinding or gas cutting.

On an Extreme Fire Danger Day, the NSW RFS advises you to take action now to protect your life and property, check your bush fire survival plan and reconsider travelling through bush fire risk areas.

🔥 Please don't be the reason firefighters are called out tomorrow.

With the weather warming up and bush fire season underway, now is the time to make sure your property is prepared and your family knows what to do.

Stay informed. Stay alert. Stay safe.

Check the official NSW RFS Fire Danger Rating before heading out today, as ratings and bans can change.
