🌸 STALLHOLDER SPOTLIGHT — Zandpaperfig Ceramics🌸

Today we’re shining the spotlight on Zandpaperfig, the creative work of Hunter Valley ceramic artist Sandy Sutton. ❤️
Sandy creates a wonderfully varied collection of handmade ceramics, with each piece designed to be beautiful, useful and something you’ll want to keep for years to come.
You’ll find mugs in all shapes and sizes, bowls, little dishes, vases and gorgeous tiny houses, as well as ceramic earrings and pendants — and because everything is handmade, no two pieces are quite the same.
And then there are Sandy’s pocket rocks — small tactile ceramic stones featuring different patterns and textures, made to sit comfortably in your hand when your fingers need something to do.
Sandy’s philosophy behind Zandpaperfig is also one we love: buy fewer things, but choose beautiful, individual pieces that you’ll treasure and keep.
Come along, meet Sandy and take your time exploring her collection. Just be warned — you may arrive looking for a gift and decide to keep it yourself! 😊

What is Zandpaperfig? Where did the name originate?

In Australia, we have a native fruit tree commonly called the Sandpaper Fig. The fruit is tiny, a quite rough on the surface(a little bit like sandpaper) and the taste is earthy, a tiny bit sweet with the perfect amount of sour. It’s one of my favourite Australian native fruit, and one of my favourite trees.

Over the years, I’ve been nicknamed Zandy by several people who were instrumental in my journal towards pottery and it seemed the perfect way to honour them, to combine that nickname with that of a favourite tree, hence the name ZANDPAPERFIG.

My logo is derived from the international standard symbol for earth in electrical drawings. It’s a nod to my past, having spent about 30 years on and off the tools as an electrician in the manufacturing industry.

Using the symbol for earth in a logo for a business that makes functional, timeless, nature-inspired objects from literal earth is a little indicator of how my neurodivergent brain works.

Yesterday, I participated in 8 to create at Maitland Regional Gallery. My inspiration was Rew Hanks’ If I Only Had a Heart (scroll through to the last photo to see it). Hanks’ artist statement for the work discusses the ‘protection’ of the armour in the tinman/Ned Kelly mash up represented in the print and the perceived invulnerability that we attach to the character within the armour. I chose to approach it quite literally, seeing the hard exterior as (for want of a better term) historical masculinity and bringing some softness with a rounded collar and heart shaped buttons replacing the rivets on the front of the body shield. I believe historical masculinity can be softened through the arts and conversation. What do you think?
