Received a text claiming you have an unpaid parking fee?

WA ScamNet is warning consumers about a relatively new phishing scam that falsely claims a parking charge is due and must be paid urgently to avoid additional fees.

The messages impersonate parking providers and directs recipients to a fake payment website designed to steal personal and financial information.

Watch out for these warning signs:
⚠️The message comes from an unknown number rather than a clearly identified business sender
⚠️ It creates urgency by threatening extra fees or other consequences
⚠️ It contains a link to make payment or verify your details
⚠️ The website address doesn't match the company's official website

Protect yourself:
✅ Don't open links in unexpected text messages
✅ Access parking accounts directly through the provider's official app or website
✅ Check the sender carefully. Legitimate commercial SMS messages should clearly identify the business sending the message
✅ Never enter personal or banking details after following a link from an unsolicited text

If you're unsure whether a parking charge is genuine, contact the provider through its official website or app.

🎃 Halloween is all about fun, but costumes can burn in seconds. A few simple checks can help keep your little ghosts and ghouls safe.

🔥 Check for fire-resistant markings:
Look for “flame-resistant” or “fire-resistant” labels on costumes, wigs, masks and accessories.

👻 Avoid long, flowing costumes:
Loose or billowy fabrics can catch fire easily. Remember, even flame-resistant materials can still burn.

⛳ Spot the red flag:
Skip products marked “Keep away from flame.”

🕯 Stay clear of open flames:
Keep costumes, wigs and accessories well away from jack-o’-lanterns, candles, fireplaces and fires.

"Your account isn't safe. Move your money now."

That's the lie scammers are using to steal thousands of dollars from Western Australians.

Recent reports to WA ScamNet show scammers impersonating banks, claiming there has been suspicious activity on victims' accounts. Victims were pressured to share security codes, download apps, transfer money and provide personal information.

Red flags of a bank impersonation scam:
🚩 Unexpected calls about account security
🚩 Requests for SMS passcodes
🚩 Instructions to transfer funds to a "safe account"
🚩 Requests to share your screen or download apps

If you receive one of these calls, hang up and contact the organisation using contact details obtained independently from its official website.

Never share banking passcodes or move money because of an unexpected phone call.

It's alleged Kmart made false and misleading representations by selling the cosmetic nail glue without warning consumers about the safety risk of burns associated with using the product, even though Kmart knew of this safety risk after receiving reports from consumers.

These included serious injuries such as burns requiring medical treatment including, in some cases, hospitalisation and skin grafts. Many of these reports related to injuries associated with fabric. Some customers also reported chemical reactions or smoke while using the nail glue.

When it comes to button batteries, the ACCC alleges Kmart failed to comply with mandatory button battery standards in relation to digital and analogue watches and GPS trackable smart tags. Button batteries are potentially deadly to young children if swallowed or inserted.

Read more about this court action 👇

In our Federal Court action, we allege that Kmart sold millions of units of cosmetic nail glue without adequately warning customers of a serious risk of injury from burns, despite Kmart knowing the safety risk after receiving reports from consumers.

We also allege Kmart failed to comply with mandatory button battery standards in relation to children's and adult's watches.

📫 Scratchie scams are back and they’re hitting WA letterboxes hard!

We’ve received seven reports in a single day, suggesting many more Western Australians may be finding glossy travel brochures and “instant win” scratchies in their mailbox.

These scratchies look legitimate, but the prize is fake.

Once you contact the so‑called travel company to claim your “prize”, they’ll ask for personal ID and upfront fees for “taxes”, “processing”, or “insurance”. After you pay, the scammers disappear.

Names used so far include:
⚠ Global Path Travel
⚠ Sunburst Dream Travel
⚠ Warm Holiday Escapes
⚠ Serene World Explorer
⚠ Simple Plan Holidays
⚠ Vibe Holiday Journeys

If you get one of these scratchies, don’t respond - just throw it away.

“Our investigation has uncovered alleged widespread anti-competitive conduct in the egg industry that we allege has impacted the supply of eggs to Australian consumers since at least 2020. This alleged conduct is extremely serious, which is why we have commenced this Federal Court action,” ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said.

“Fair competition in the supply of fresh food such as eggs is extremely important. Anti-competitive conduct disadvantages Australian consumers, who can face reduced choice and higher prices, as well as those businesses seeking to compete fairly or who are seeking to enter markets to provide competing supply.”

Read more about this action 👇

We allege Australia's biggest egg supplier Sunny Queen and 11 egg producers and suppliers have breached competition laws by coordinating the production and supply of eggs in Australia.

Anti-competitive conduct disadvantages Australian consumers, who can face reduced choice and higher prices, as well as businesses looking to compete fairly or enter markets.

We've alleged that these companies coordinated in a range of decisions about their business operations, including the amount of eggs they could produce and what retailers the businesses could supply eggs to.
