Built in 1842, Cummins began as a modest five-room residence constructed from red brick.
π
At the time, bricks were expensive and difficult to source, so John Morphett took matters into his own hands β using clay from the banks of the Sturt River that flowed through the property and firing his own bricks in a small on-site kiln.

Many Victorian-era kitchens would have proudly displayed a copy of Mrs Beetonβs Book of Household Management.
π
First published in 1861, it was an essential guide of the time, packed with recipes, household budgeting advice, and even remedies for common ailments.
π
So perhaps it was Mrs Beetonβs famous cookbook that the staff at Cummins turned to when they needed a recipe for pigeon pie? π₯§π
