Vireya’s are tougher than you think, this unnamed hybrid in a gully is under blackwood canopy, never watered and doing well despite neglect!!! Being in the Dandenong Ranges helps but still they have to tolerate the constant traffic of deer, wombats, wallabies and rabbits!

Some photos of the deciduous azalea, R. austrinum that was in flower last week at Olinda. It's well and truly finished now after the heat over the weekend and the storms today! One of many deciduous azaleas native to the US, this comes from the southern states including Florida and Georgia. It is a really stunning flower with a great fragrance!

The big leaf rhododendrons are flowering at the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden! Here are some photos of R. magnificum; a beautiful tree with huge leaves and wonderful purple trumpet-like flowers. R. magnificum is a member of the Grandia group. This group of rhododendrons share some similar characteristics of huge trusses of trumpet-like flowers, long oval leaves and often a shiny coating on the underside of the leaves that is either silver or light fawn. Far from their natural home in northern China and the Himalayas, these are spectacular rhododendrons.
