Look out for litter 🗑️

Every piece of litter damages our environment.

Not only does litter make an area look uncared for and dirty, attracting more litter, but it can often end up in our waterways through storm water drains or being blown by wind and it poses a threat to wildlife.

Common litter items are takeaway and beverage items, confectionery and snacks, drink containers (plastic and metal), cigarette butts, small pieces of paper, bottle caps, plastic straws and pieces of glass bottles.

Let’s do our part and keep our communities clean and healthy.

Dispose of your waste properly when you get home, and if you do see litter, pick it up safely and dispose of it at the nearest bin location.

The environment will thank you 🙏🏽🌱

Repurposing waste.

Waste 2 Art may be over for another year, but we wanted to share this wonderful exhibition catalogue from the Broken Hill Waste 2 Art exhibition that was held from 30 May - 17 July 2026, before the town hosted the Regional Showcase in August.

With this year's exhibition featuring 74 creative artworks, the catalogue showcases these artworks and gives more details on how locals repurposed waste into art.

Start unwasting by cooking just right.

There’s no better feeling than when you cook the perfect amount - clean plates, full stomachs, no leftovers - the perfect unwasting of food.

Here’s some top tips to make sure you cook just the right amount:

👉🏼 Hunger check - before cooking check how hungry everyone is and whether they’ll be home for dinner, so you can avoid wasting your homemade meals

👉🏼 Slice those recipes - use tools available online to cut recipe sizes down to exact number of people, to help you cook the perfect meal size

👉🏼Check those packets - recommended serving sizes can be a great way to help you unwaste

👉🏼Give measuring a go - let measuring cups and scales become your most used item in the kitchen

Skip the hassle of getting leftovers into a jam-packed fridge and tossing it by the weekend, by cooking just what you need.

Fast tech: don’t bin it, bring it!

Today marks International E-Waste Day, a global initiative run by WEEE Forum (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Forum) to raise awareness and inspire action around the challenges of electronic waste.

This year’s theme is ‘Fast tech: the small and inexpensive electronic products that have become part of everyday life’.

The theme focuses on the growth of Fast Tech and its disposable culture resulting in a large and growing volume of items that exit everyday use each year, with the vast majority of which are never properly collected or recycled.

Fast Tech includes items such as earphones, charging cables, USB adapters, LED string lights, mini fans, single use vapes, toys and other types of gadgets.

Unlike large household appliances, Fast Tech items are rarely perceived as electronic waste and thrown in the general bin and not safely disposed of.

The benefits of your greener, green bin.

The Food Organics and Garden Organics from your FOGO green bin are used to create compost for farmers to grow food.

It’s important that you only put food scraps and garden waste into your FOGO green bin so nothing gets contaminated.

These are some items that DO NOT belong in your FOGO green bin:

❌ Food packaging and containers
❌ Plastic bags and soft plastic
❌ Newspaper and cardboard
❌ Tissues and paper towels
❌ Pet waste
❌ Textiles

By putting only what’s supposed to go in the FOGO green bin, you’re helping your local community and farmers to produce top quality compost that in turn grows nutritious food for us to enjoy.

Check your local Council website for more details.

Creativity on show.

In conjunction with the 2026 Sustainable Living Expo, Orange City Council ran the Lake Canobolas Bin Wrap Competition.

Students from across schools in Orange had the opportunity to put their creativity and imagination to work, designing artwork inspired by sustainability, recycling and nature, with selected artworks to be featured on bins around Lake Canobolas.

After public voting, the winning artworks were displayed at the Sustainable Living Expo on Sunday 20 September.

Congratulations to all the students and classes that entered, the local community for getting behind the competition and Orange City Council for organising it.

We’re looking forward to seeing the creative and colourful artworks brighten up Lake Canobolas whilst continuing to share the importance around sustainability and caring for our environment.
