If you’ve recently wandered through Panboola, you’ll no doubt have noticed pops of colour all around, with many native species flowering and putting their beautiful blooms on display.

Not just pretty to look at, each plant has a role to play in the greater ecosystem of the wetlands, providing food and shelter for birds, wildlife and insects, as well as contributing to soil health and water filtration.

These are just a handful of the native plants you’ll find blooming this October. Let us know if you spot any others!

Have you come across the energetic Golden-headed Cisticola (Cisticola exilis)?

The striking golden-orange colouring belongs to the males during breeding season, while outside of this time, males and females look very similar, with brown plumage and dark streaks.

Nicknamed the “tailorbird”, they’re known not only for their distinctive singing but also for their attention to detail when it comes to nest building, using grass, stolen spider webs and live leaves stitched together.

Keep an eye out for a Golden-headed Cisticola on your next wander through the wetlands.

Introducing the newest art installation at Panboola! Have you spotted it yet?

Created by David Doyle, whose work is inspired by nature and Australian flora, this piece was gifted to us by one of our founding members. It was originally purchased at Sculpture Bermagui and spent many years installed at a nearby Nethercote residence.

After recently downsizing, the property owners generously passed the sculpture on to Panboola for everyone to enjoy.

We think it fits beautifully with our existing nature-inspired works. As you approach and walk past the sculpture, it reveals a number of different silhouettes, depending on the time of day.

We hope you love it as much as we do!

This year’s Migratory Bird Day theme is “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter”, and with the recent rise in bird flu cases, we couldn’t think of a more important time to be looking out for our feathered friends.

Get involved by downloading the free iNaturalist app (see our September 14th post) and start documenting your migratory bird observations, participating in local birdwatching events, and always reporting sick or injured birds.

We’re lucky enough to have a few migratory bird species visit us throughout the year, and the aim is to continue making Panboola a place they return to year after year.

It’s that time of year again when we remind locals and visitors heading to Panboola of a few seasonal scaly and feathered friends who may be a little more active than usual.

Swipe through to read, and as always, please keep your dogs on leashes in designated dog-friendly areas. Please also see the last slide for who to call in case of sick or injured wildlife.

Thank you for helping keep Panboola safe for all! 🦎🦢
