Did you know our state is home to 152,804 people of Filipino ancestry? 🌏

This community spans every generation:
👶 26.8% aged 19 and under
🧑 42.7% aged 20 – 44
👵 30.5% aged 45 and over

There are also more women than men of Filipino ancestry in NSW. 👩

Filipino heritage brings its own warmth to local NSW life. Warmth that is best shared around a table with a steaming plate of adobo 🍲, the Philippines' much-loved dish slow-cooked in vinegar, soy sauce and garlic.

Did you know?

Children as young as six are repeating misogynistic language picked up from online influencers. With the influence of the “manosphere” reaching younger audiences, All Together Now spent six months listening to young people about how they respond. The result is Unplug Hate, a campaign designed and led by 18 to 25 year olds, now on posters and coasters in cafes, bars and libraries across Sydney.

Design Against Hate is funded by Multicultural NSW's COMPACT program, which works across communities to empower young people, foster social cohesion and stand united against divisive forces.

Refugee, nurse, businessman and community leader, he's spent more than 20 years working to make the Mid North Coast a place where everyone belongs.��For Htun Htun, building a strong multicultural community comes down to a simple idea: “I see absolute power in giving. I see absolute power in kindness, in loving and compassion.”

Today we’re celebrating International Translation Day and the incredible interpreters and translators who help people across NSW be heard and understood.

At Multicultural NSW, we have more than 1,000 NAATI-certified language practitioners who support communities in more than 120 languages and dialects.

This year, we’re proud to welcome 73 interpreters and translators celebrating their first International Translation Day with us – while also recognising six practitioners who have reached an incredible 40 years of service.

Through initiatives like the Multilingual NSW Academy, we’re continuing to invest in our language services workforce, with professional development and specialist training to support practitioners throughout their careers.

Today, we thank all our interpreters and translators for their expertise, professionalism and commitment to the people of NSW.

Here’s what can happen when young people are given the chance to identify a challenge in their community and come up with their own solution….

Young people in Sydney’s Assyrian community found that there weren’t many places they could go at night to study, spend time together and feel connected. And because community and belonging are so important, they asked: how could they recreate that sense of connection for young people?

And so, Sip, Study, Shlama was born. It’s a late-night study space with a combo of bubble tea, learning and, most importantly, a place to come together.

The idea was developed through NSW Global Links: Partnerships 4 Peace, where young people explored what mattered to their community and developed ideas for change.

The program is funded through Multicultural NSW’s COMPACT Program and delivered by the Institute for Economics and Peace, Shayna Humanitarian Services and Unbound Stories.

It started with five mums chatting in a Merrylands park. Ten years on, Samira Mashal's Afghan Women Support Association has grown into a network of 30 volunteers helping Afghan women across Western Sydney build new lives - one MyGov form, English class and friendship at a time.

"Afghan women should not only be recognised for what they have survived, they should also be recognised for what they are building," says Samira.

What starts with a football can sometimes lead to so much more. ⚽️

For young people across Western Sydney, the Creating Chances Game Changers Program is using sport to build confidence, leadership skills, connections and pathways into work.

Ruby found her confidence and is now coaching other young women. Harrison has stepped into a student leadership role, while Shegofa manages the Sydney United Afghan Girls team. For each of them, sport has opened the door to new opportunities and ways to make a difference in their communities.

The Program is funded by Multicultural NSW through COMPACT, with young people turning their ideas for stronger communities into action. Because sometimes, giving a young person a chance to have a go is all it takes to help them see what they’re capable of.
