Know a veteran who'd be a great fit for this role? Tag them in the comments.

Leaving the military doesn't mean leaving behind the skills you've spent years developing. This opportunity offers a chance to put your security, operations and situational awareness experience to work in a civilian setting.

What military skills have helped you most in your civilian career? Let us know in the comments. πŸ‘‡

For many veterans, it's the ability to perform under pressure, collaborate as part of a team, and maintain high safety standards.

In the latest Veterans at Council vodcast from Careers at Council, VEP Manager Craig (Dallas) Delaney OAM speaks with veteran Samantha Cowan about her journey from the military to local government and reflects on the skills and experiences that have shaped her career.

If you're a veteran considering your next move, there's plenty of practical advice in this conversation.

When applying for a role, ask yourself: what can I offer that other applicants can't?

For veterans, military service is often one of your biggest points of difference. The skills developed through service, including discipline, punctuality, attention to detail, adaptability and teamwork, are highly valued by employers.

Think about the experiences you've had leading teams, solving problems under pressure, adapting to changing environments, managing risk, or delivering results in high-stakes situations.

Most importantly, describe these experiences in language that civilian employers can easily understand.

Don't assume employers will automatically recognise the value of your service. Help them connect the dots by explaining how your experience and skills relate to the role.

The strongest applications don't just list skills. They clearly tell a clear and compelling story about the value the candidate brings and what sets them apart.

AI can be great for brainstorming ideas, understanding selection criteria, and helping you structure your responses. But when it comes to telling your story, your voice matters. If your interview doesn’t match your CV and cover letter, it can be a red flag for the interview panel.

Employers want to hear about your experience, achievements, and what makes you stand out from the crowd. If your application sounds generic, you could miss the chance to showcase what makes you unique.

Before you hit submit:
βœ… Make sure the content accurately reflects your experience
βœ… Check that every claim is true and backed by real examples
βœ… Ask yourself: "Could I confidently talk about this in an interview?"
