Professor Barry Marshall and Dr Robin Warren were awarded a joint Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine for their ground-breaking research in the RPH Pathology Department between 1979 and 1984.
They discovered that gastric ulcers were caused by a previously unknown bacterium, Helicobacter pylori. Up until this time, ulcers were believed to be caused by stress, spicy food or acid.
When they had difficulty in getting the results of their research recognised, Marshall subjected himself to an extraordinary experiment. He infected himself with the bacteria, treated the infection with antibiotics, and then made a full recovery.
This discovery revolutionised the diagnosis and treatment of peptic ulcer disease.

On International Nurses Day we acknowledge nurses around the world but particularly those who work, or have worked, at Royal Perth Hospital.
Robin Miller was an RPH nurse and pilot, famous for flying the polio vaccination to remote and regional communities in Western Australia. The oral vaccine was administered on a lump of sugar to disguise its bitter taste. Aboriginal children in regional Australia called her the 'Sugar Bird Lady'.
Thanks to Royal Perth Hospital for the image of student nurse Robin Miller.

You don't often see photos of the back of buildings! This is the back of the Colonial Hospital in about 1919.
