CSI: Crab Shell Investigators 🦀🔍

Our team has collected around 1,200 samples from crabs in Cockburn Sound and now they’re using an x-ray fluorescence detector to inspect their unique mineral signature 🕵️💎

Two unlicensed recreational boat fishers have been fined more than $7,600 and ordered to forfeit equipment used in illegal fishing activities, including a boat, trailer and fishing rods.

The men were found guilty of fishing without a licence, fishing in a prohibited zone and the illegal take of 11 undersize pink snapper from closed waters north of Cape Naturaliste in June this year.

Boat-based fishing for demersal scalefish, including pink snapper, is currently not permitted in the West Coast region between Kalbarri and Augusta to help stocks recover to sustainable levels.

Congratulations to Amelia – she’s won this round of our FADs photo comp!

With an impressive 64cm dolly caught on her family holiday off Exmouth, Mum snapped this photo with FAD #35 in the background and sent it in via our form.

Trout hatchlings from back in June – they’re a lot bigger now and ready for release at Troutfest this weekend!

Our Pemberton Freshwater Hatchery is chockas full of thousands of trout, which we’ve grown out to stock across south-west dams and waterways as part of our annual breeding program.

If you look carefully, you can see the alevins' tiny hearts beating, and their bright orange yolk sacs packed full of nutrients to help them fully develop into thriving fingerlings.

If you’re fishing at the Abrolhos Islands, remember the baldchin groper spawning closure is now in place 🎣

The closure applies to land-based fishers, while boat-based fishing for all demersal species remains closed under the demersal recovery reforms. The seasonal closure gives fish protection while they’re spawning – this helps replenish stocks and support long-term sustainability.

Abalone fishing from Busselton Jetty to the South Australian border reopens today! 🦪

Greenlip abalone fishing remains closed between Busselton Jetty and Shoal Cape until further notice to support stock recovery.

Think taking one fish out of season doesn’t matter? Think again.

Since June, Fisheries Officers have conducted thousands of inspections across Western Australia, and while it’s great to see most fishers are doing the right thing, we're targeting those who aren't.

Officers needed to get out the screwdriver to find this pink snapper which was hidden under floorboards when our officers inspected a dinghy near Ngoorloormayup / Carnac Island – during the Cockburn & Warnbro Sound snapper spawning closure.

Whether it's a demersal species taken during the West Coast boat fishing closure, fishing during a spawning closure or for any fish protected by seasonal rules, taking 1 fish is 1 too many.
