How have your Aussie Bird Counts been going?

So far, the team have recorded 22 species in our onsite counts and another nine species we’ve counted on the sightings map on the app (thanks counters!). 🦆🦅🦜

With 129 species on the list for Whiteman Park, there are a few more we could find! 😉

Pictured here is a nesting pair of galahs, a red wattlebird, two Australian shovelers and a bronzewing pigeon.

There are four more days of this easy-to-join citizen science project, so why not get involved!

Big playground energy, little explorer approved. 👀🛝

Welcome to Pia’s Place, where there’s plenty of room to run, climb, swing and discover.

And don’t just take our word for it! @‌jaimee.andres says it’s “genuinely one of the best playgrounds we’ve visited in Perth” thanks to its huge, beautifully spread-out spaces and play areas for different ages.

Designed as an inclusive, nature-based play space, Pia’s Place has something for everyone, from accessible swings, rockers and sand play to sensory plants, tunnels, cosy nooks and spaces to spot local wildlife. 🌿🐦

And, of course, there’s the lighthouse to climb and explore! 🔭✨

Planning your next family day out? Add Pia’s Place to the list and come discover it for yourself. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Say hi to October's wildflower: the delightfully sunny cowslip orchid. 👋

As happens with nature, the peak flowering of these beauties seems to have passed here in the Park (our September featured pixie mops are finally in bloom though! 😉) But that doesn't mean we can't explore them here... 😅

The cowslips are one of the easiest orchid species to spot in the Park, which is why they got the October top spot. Not only do their bright yellow petals stand out amongst the sands and bushland, but where they bloom helps too!

Despite measuring between just 2-5cm across, the cowslips stand out alongside the Children's Forest footpath connecting the Village and Mussel Pool, as well as in the Forest itself and along the Wunanga Trail. ⭐

Fun fact: they are closely related to another easy-to-find orchid too - the pink fairy orchid. Scroll through to see some of the notable features of this vibrant orchid!

The Whiteman Park team are getting ready to take part in the annual next week! 🐦🦆🦅🦉

We love taking part in this Australia-wide citizen science project that helps bird conservation. It kicks off on Monday, and runs for the whole week (that's October 19 - 25 for the calendarphiles).

What do you do, you ask?
You'll need a spare 20 minutes to sit and count the birdlife in your area! Whether that is in your backyard, your front yard, your local park (like ours!😉😉) or even looking out your office window, the idea is to get involved and get to know the wildlife in your area.

If you’re new to birding, that’s ok too - the Aussie Bird Count app includes a handy bird identifier tool. 🕵️‍♀️🔎🧐

Head straight to the page for all the details and in the meantime, check out some of the birdlife you might be able to add to your spot if you do a count here in the Park! Can you name any of them?

📍 Tickets available from the conductor on board.

Trams follow a one-directional route starting from the Village. Check the service schedule for stop locations and the order of travel before you hop aboard! 🚋

It may be grey in Perth today, but there are still swathes of colour to enjoy, like the sea of golden long heads that have been gracing the sandy heathlands of the Park!

These small (and often sticky!) herbs pop up between August and December each year, painting the landscape yellow. 💛
