Our aim is to provide and promote equitable opportunity for meeting the informational needs of the people of the City of Kalamunda in a friendly and helpful environment. OUR STORY
The City of Kalamunda Library Service has provided more than 62 years of continuous library service. It has been a vital part of the community since it began in 1958, and its history illustrates how it has responded to the needs of local people. On 3 October 1958 the district's first public library opened in a small transportable building at Recreation Reserve (now Kostera Oval). This consisted of two timber and fibro huts which were purchased from Allawah Grove a former migrant hostel in Guildford, to be used as temporary premises for a library.

โ€ข 1963 - New Public Library at Kalamunda opened on Railway Road.
โ€ข 1977 - โ€˜Friends of the Libraryโ€™ and housebound delivery service established.
โ€ข 1978 - Mobile Library service established.
โ€ข 1980 - Forrestfield Library officially opened.
โ€ข 1982 - Lesmurdie Community Library opened, first joint-use library to be built in WA.
โ€ข 1984 - Local History Collection established.
โ€ข 1987 - Major extensions to the Kalamunda Library.
โ€ข 1988 - High Wycombe Library officially opened.
โ€ข 1988 - Stained glass window completed and handed over to the Shire of Kalamunda.
โ€ข 1991 - Automation arrived and the card catalogue departed.
โ€ข 1997 - High Wycombe Library extended.
โ€ข 2009 - Catalogue went online.
โ€ข 2015 - page launched.
โ€ข 2017 - Kalamunda Library refurbished with Self-Check technology.
โ€ข 2018 - Celebrated the 60th Anniversary of Library Services.
โ€ข 2020 โ€“ Implementation of New Library Management System & Online Catalogue
โ€ข 2021 - Here we are today! We now have a fabulous eLibrary too and continue to host many and varied events & programmes catering for all community members.

In the early 1900s the Kalamunda district was a popular holiday destination for the people of Perth. One guesthouse in the area was Glen Avon, which stood on Lesmurdie Road, where the Villa Maria retirement village is today.

Glen Avon was built in around 1910 by Wheelwright and Brady, on land which at the time was owned by Archibald Sanderson, and initially it operated solely as a menโ€™s guest house. After the First World War, when St Andrews Hospital was operating (in the building which is St Brigidโ€™s College today), it was used to house the nurses. The first Lesmurdie Post Office also operated from there.

After the war it became a guest house again and was a popular holiday home run by a succession of owners โ€“ Mrs Cheetham in the early 1920s, Mrs Agar from around 1929, and John and Nora Mingay from 1949 until the mid-1950s.

After the Second World War it passed into the hands of the Catholic Church.
