WORKING TOGETHER FOR OUR COMMUNITY 🧡

Today, emergency services responded to an incident involving a young boy at the Koroit Skate Park.

Our Port Fairy SES members worked alongside Ambulance Victoria, Victoria Police, Koroit Fire Brigade CFA Kirkstall Fire Brigade and FRV, with everyone coming together to support the response.

While each agency brings different skills and expertise, we all had the same goal, working together to help a young member of our community when they needed us.

Incidents like these highlight the importance of teamwork, communication and cooperation between emergency services. When we work together, we can draw on each other’s skills and support one another to get the job done.

Different agencies. One team. One shared goal.

MEET OUR MEMBERS | BREE ⭐️

Meet Bree! Bree joined Port Fairy SES around four years ago and quickly found her passion for SES and helping the community. Always eager to learn, Bree jumped at every opportunity that came her way, embracing new challenges and completing training courses. Her natural leadership soon shone through, and today she is our Deputy Controller of Community Engagement.

We asked Bree a few questions to get to know her a little better!

💬 What made you join SES?

I joined on a whim! I got chatting with the members at one of the local shows and was inspired to get involved. It was only after joining that I discovered my Poppy had been the first Controller of Port Fairy SES. Finding out about his connection to the unit made it even more special and gave me a real passion for wanting to do good things in the community, just like he did.

With young kids, I never thought I’d be able to commit to something like SES, but the flexibility and passion within the unit make it much easier than you might think!

💬 What do you enjoy most about being part of SES?

I love being able to connect with and get involved in our local community. I also love the courses and skills you get to learn along the way. There’s always something new to learn, and I love that SES continually challenges me to step outside my comfort zone.

💬 What’s one thing you’ve gained from being part of SES that you didn’t expect?

A sense of identity outside of being a mum. With young children, it’s so important to have something that’s just for you — something that gives you your own purpose, friendships and sense of achievement. When I’m at SES, I’m not just Mum; I’m Bree!

Want to be part of a team, learn new skills and make a difference in your community? We’d love to hear from you!

SES SKILLS DON’T JUST STAY AT SES!

Ever thought about how joining SES could benefit you in everyday life?

It’s about so much more than responding to emergencies. You’ll build confidence, learn practical skills, develop problem-solving abilities and become part of a team that supports you along the way.

Ever wanted to get your truck licence? SES can provide opportunities to work towards licences, qualifications and specialist training that you might never have considered before.

From 4WD driving, chainsaw operations and working at heights to road crash rescue and traffic management, there are opportunities to learn new skills and gain qualifications that can benefit you in your workplace and everyday life.

You’ll also learn how to stay calm under pressure, work with others and tackle challenges you might once have thought were beyond you.

You don’t need to arrive with experience. You just need to be willing to learn!

Imagine what you could achieve by giving something new a go.

Ready to see where SES could take you?

MEET OUR MEMBERS- RAY ⭐️

Meet Ray! Ray has been part of our Port Fairy SES unit for around 4 years and is a friendly face around the unit who’s always up for a chat and a good laugh!

Ray is a great team player who enjoys being part of the crew, having a laugh with the rest of the team and getting in to help when it matters. He’s a valued part of our unit and brings plenty of good humour along the way!

We asked Ray a few questions about his SES journey so far 👇

💬 What made you want to join SES?

“After asking a friend who was already a member lots of questions about the ins and outs of SES and attending the unit’s Christmas party, I saw how friendly and welcoming everyone was and thought, ‘I can be a part of this.’”

💬 What have you enjoyed most about being part of SES?

“Learning new skills, getting a truck licence and having a sense of being part of the community have all been great.”

💬 What has your experience been like since joining?

“No problem fitting in. Everyone is welcoming and inclusive. No one is an individual — you are part of a team.”

🧡 Thanks, Ray, for being a valued part of our Port Fairy SES team! We appreciate everything you do.

MEET OUR MEMBERS- PHIL ⭐️

Meet Phil, who has been a member of SES for an incredible 18 years!

Phil lives just out of town but can still respond when needed. When he’s not helping the community, you’ll often find him enjoying one of his favourite things — a dip in the ocean! 🌊

We asked Phil a few questions about his SES journey 👇

💬 What first attracted you to SES, and what has surprised you?

“I believed SES was a great volunteer group that assisted a variety of people needing assistance. The thing that most surprised me was the gratitude of those people we assisted.

My first job was a collapsed wall onto a house in the middle of the night and we were still working clearing the site in the morning. The owner had been up the street bringing back breakfast and coffees for every member. I was surprised that someone going through such a crisis even considered this, given what he was going through.”

💬 What is one thing you have taken from your SES training and attending jobs?

“I think the one thing I have taken out of my SES training and attending jobs is to always be conscious of safety and not to just jump in.”

💬 What has been your favourite moment in your 18 years with SES?

“My most favourite moment in my 18 years in the SES was finding a special needs young man who had been missing overnight and the joy of reuniting him with his father.

Although there are many memories that I cherish from my close connections with other members, the fun and care we share with each other and the feeling we get from assisting those in need.”

🧡 Thanks Phil, for 18 incredible years of service to our community! 👏

A huge congratulations to our member Colin, who has recently completed his Safe Working at Heights (SWAH) qualification! 👏

This is just one of the many amazing opportunities and qualifications you can achieve through SES. From learning practical rescue skills to gaining nationally recognised qualifications, there’s always something new to learn and another challenge to take on.

EMERGENCY SERVICES WORK BETTER TOGETHER.

One of the great things about being part of SES is the opportunity to work alongside other emergency services.

CFA.
Victoria Police.
Ambulance Victoria.
Marine Rescue.
Surf Life Saving.
And many other local organisations.

Different organisations, different skills, but one common goal — helping our community when it needs us.

You’ll build skills, experience and friendships while working alongside some pretty amazing people.

It’s more than volunteering. It’s being part of a team that works together when it matters.

WHO WERE YOU BEFORE LIFE GOT SO BUSY?

Before the kids.
Before work took over.
Before weekends became sport, shopping, chores and everything in between.

Maybe you were someone who loved a challenge, meeting new people or trying something different.

Life might be busy, but there’s still room to do something for yourself.

And you don’t have to fit a certain mould to be part of SES.

Some work shifts. Some travel for work. Some have young kids. Some are retired. Some are brand new.

There’s no one way to be a volunteer.

You just need to be willing to give something new a go.

Maybe it’s time to find a little bit of you again ⭐️

MEET OUR MEMBERS — SEAN ⭐️

Meet Sean — a family man who travels a lot for work, but still makes time for SES when he’s home. He’s hands-on, loves a bit of banter and a good laugh, and is always up for getting stuck in.

Sean is a great example of how SES can fit around your life. You might work away, do shift work or have a busy family life — you can still be part of the team and get involved when you’re available.

💬 What made you decide to join SES?

“I joined because my uncle has been in SES for as long as I can remember, and I’ve always looked up to him for it. It took me a long time to get my life together and join up, and I thought maybe it might bring me some good karma too.

I love helping people. I’m not really book smart, but I can use my hands.”

💬 What’s your favourite thing about being a member?

“Probably the better part is learning different skills that I never would have thought about. I’ve also learnt how to deal with lots of different people… and how to handle the difficult ones.”

💬 What advice would you give someone thinking about joining SES?

“Just give it a go. You never know what you’ll learn, who you’ll meet or what you might be capable of.”

Work away? Shift worker? Busy with family?

There’s still a place for you at SES.
