We navigate waterways alongside whales, dolphins, seals, seabirds and other protected marine animals.
Unfortunately, that means that boaters and water-users can encounter stranded or injured wildlife.
These incidents include vessel collisions, entanglement (caused by marine debris and fishing industry equipment), and strandings.
If you encounter an injured, stranded or entangled animal:
• Keep your distance
• Put your safety first
• Contact the right wildlife response service for help

22 May is International Day for Biological Diversity.
From Port Phillip Bay to the Gippsland Lakes and beyond, Victoria’s marine environments are rich with unique ecosystems - and we all have a role in keeping them safe.
Whether you're boating, paddling or fishing, we all share a responsibility to maintain and look after our waterways.

It's International Day for Women in Maritime, and were celebrating the women helping shape Victoria’s maritime community — from boating and fishing to marine safety, education and industry leadership.
We’re also recognising the important work of Women in Recreational Fishing and Boating (WIRFAB), which helps create opportunities for more women to get involved in recreational boating and fishing through events, education and community connection.
Whether you’re experienced on the water or just getting started, there’s a place for everyone in Victoria’s boating community.

Our thoughts are also with those who are doing it tough today.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest we forget.

Easter egg hunts aren’t the only thing that need preparation! 🥚
Before you set sail, make sure your boat is equipped with the right safety gear and check the conditions on your waterway.
Smooth sailing and an egg-cellent long weekend to all!

A day out on the water—it doesn't get much better than that.
These rules are there to protect riders like you, and everyone else sharing the water.
Riding with control keeps days fun, avoids conflict, and helps protect the places we all enjoy.
Ride smart. Stay in control. Don't risk the consequences.

Riding a jet ski? The 5-knot speed limit is critical if you are:
⚓ Within 50m of people, vessels or structures (such as wharves, jetties and boat ramps)
🚩 Within 100m of a dive flag
🏖️ Within 200m of the shore on coastal waters and the Bays (or 500m from Martha Point to Point Nepean)
These rules are in place to protect swimmers, other vessels, and marine life. Do your part to keep safe this summer.
Control isn’t optional. It’s what experienced riders do.
