Adults can learn new skills at any stage of life. Improving reading, writing, maths and digital literacy for everyday tasks can open doors, build confidence and transform lives.

26Ten supports Tasmanians to improve their reading, writing and everyday maths. Get help from a friendly tutor, in person or online. Itโ€™s free and confidential.

Children's Week starts tomorrow on 24 October!

This week promotes awareness of children's rights under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The theme for 2026 is based on UNCRC Article 30:

Libraries are a safe place where children and families can engage and learn. We love seeing children come for Rock and Rhyme, find joy in books and be part of our children focused activities.

Did you know a child can have a library membership from the day they're born? With a membership they can access:

๐ŸŒ LOTE4Kids โ€“ a digital collection of over 4,500 picture books (eBooks and audiobooks) in 70+ languages.

๐Ÿ“š Little Explorers book packs โ€“ packs contain five books on an early learning topic for children aged 4โ€“8 years.

๐Ÿ’ฌ VOX Books โ€“ read a picture book and listen at the same time. Each print book is fitted with a special reader on the inside cover that plays a read-a-long.

If you want to learn more about the UNCRC, check out these books in the Libraries Tasmania catalogue:
โ€ข I Have the Right to Be a Child by Alain Serres, pictures by Aurรฉlia Fronty and translated by Helen Mixter
โ€ข Every Child a Song by Nicola Davies and illustrated by Marc Martin

Some of the world's most celebrated books have also been some of the most challenged.

๐Ÿ“š From classics to contemporary favourites, our latest display showcases books that have been banned, challenged, or restricted in different countries and at different times throughout history. Yet these stories continue to spark conversations, challenge ideas, and connect readers across generations.

How many have you read? Which banned book would you recommend to others?

Visit Queenstown Library and explore the collection for yourself. Each book has information on why they were banned and where.

National Carers Week started on Sunday 11 October. It's a time to recognise, celebrate and raise awareness of the more than 3 million Australians who provide unpaid care to a family member or friend.

Did you know that carers are able to access the Home Library Service? If you don't have time to make it to the library while providing daily care, volunteer couriers can deliver library books, DVDs and more to you.

Contact your local library to register, or join online: https://bit.ly/4dGfGBq

This week is Anti-Poverty Week (Sunday 11 October โ€“ Saturday 17 October), with the aim of helping Australians understand poverty and take action collectively to end it.

Signing up for a library membership is free and gives you access to lots of free resources including books, movies, video games, magazines and our online eLibrary.

Use your library membership to check out these titles on poverty to help grow your understanding of the topic:

๐Ÿ“š ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜Œ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜บ ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜น: ๐˜ธ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฐ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜บ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ด ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ช๐˜ต by Keetie Roelen (non-fiction) โ€“ exposes the realities of poverty and reveals why policies don't work. It is a radical rethink of current efforts to tackle poverty, what it means and how we break the cycle.

๐Ÿ“š ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ž๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜š๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด by Tom Percival (junior fiction) โ€“ Will has the wrong shoes, he's always known it but doesn't know how to change it. Navigating the difficulties of home and school when you feel you stick out is tough, but finding confidence with the help and empathy of friends can be all you need to see the way.

๐Ÿ“š ๐˜ˆ ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ ๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ by Matthew Hooper (adult fiction) โ€“ set between the wars in the foothills of Mount Kosciusko, this is a story of fourteen-year-old Beth. Bethโ€™s brother and father have gone missing in a freak winter storm. Tensions flare in this novel that captures rural poverty and human capacity with true soul.
