Our firefighters have been out today, helping our good friends at Orchard Hills Rural Fire Brigade to support a local landowner with pile burns.

👩‍🌾🔥 Safe pile burning is an important way to reduce fuel load on your property ahead of summer, but it’s important that it’s done safely. Make sure to follow the RFS Standards for Pile Burning (https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0012/13323/Standards-for-Pile-Burning-V2.pdf)

📍🗓️ A reminder for Penrith City Council residents- the Bush Fire Danger Period starts this Thursday, 1st of October. After that, open burning is no longer covered by Council’s approval period (1 April to 30 September).

If you are still planning to burn before then:
• Check that you are eligible under Council’s Open Burning – Environmental Approval
• Notify your neighbours
• Notify the NSW RFS at least 24 hours before lighting up here: rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify

And remember, always check the weather and confirm there isn’t a Total Fire Ban or EPA no-burn day enforced. If you are unsure, contact the Cumberland/Macarthur District RFS on (02) 4734 7777.

🌟Attention Emu Plains Residents🌟
With favourable conditions approaching this weekend, the NSW Rural Fire Service are planning to conduct a Hazard Reduction on Forbes Street, as detailed below.

This is an important part of fuel management in the area to protect from wildfires, and we appreciate everyone’s support and understanding.

All tracks and trails in and close to the burn will be closed until the area has been assessed and considered safe for public access. The M4 Eastbound will also be under traffic control with a reduced speed limit for the duration of the burn.

During the burn, you may experience periods of smoke and ash fall, particularly for motorists on the M4 and residents living close to the area. We recommend that you:

🪟 Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering homes
🪑 Keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns
🏊‍♂️ Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage
🧺 Remove washing from clothes lines
🐶 Ensure pets have a protected area
🚘 Vehicles must slow down, keep windows up, turn headlights on
🕵️‍♂️ Sightseers must keep away from burns for their own safety
😮‍💨 If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities if smoke levels are high and if shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice

Thank you to everyone who came down today, saw the attractions and spoke to our firefighters about preparing for the upcoming season. Many learned how , highlighting how embers can travel ahead of a fire front and ignite leaves, debris and other flammable material- even in suburbs like Glenmore Park and Emu Plains.

A final very special thank you to Sydney Helicopters for their generous time and hospitality showing off one of their stunning firefighting helicopters! 🤩

Today, Regentville crews had the opportunity to attend training with Fire and Rescue NSW at the Emergency Services Academy.

Through the day, we performed scenario based drills with both agencies taking a primary and secondary role on each rotation. We also had the opportunity to gain a better understanding of high rise firefighting tactics. Somewhat more importantly, we developed our working relationship and understanding with each other, and had a great day out learning new skills and rehersing some old ones with our neighbouring stations.

Thanks to the other Brigades and excellent Instructors 🙌🔥

This weekend, four of our Fire Boat Skippers attended an upskilling course in St Georges Basin, to become qualified as Rescue Boat Operators (RBO).

Flood rescue operations are a new frontier for the , allowing us to provide a surge capacity to our sister agencies following some of the devastating flood events since 2020. RFS flood rescue boats and other flood capabilities are currently being rolled out to strategic locations across the state.

Our skippers learnt the unique hazards and strategies to effectively handle vessels, operate, search and perform rescues in flood waters. This important training has gone a long way to develop both local and state wide capability.

Special thanks to everyone involved in bringing this weekend together, and the local Brigades St George’s Basin and Basin View for their hospitality!
