Thinking about a career in support work? Here are our top tips to get started!
At Ready Enable, we often hear from people who are curious about becoming a support worker. It’s a rewarding career — but it’s important to be prepared. Here’s how to start strong:
1. Get your essential checks and training ready.
Make sure you have the basics covered:
✅ First Aid Certificate
✅ Working With Children Check
✅ National Police Check
✅ Complete the free NDIS Worker Orientation Module
You can apply for the NDIS Worker Screening Check after you receive a job offer.
2. Enrol in a relevant qualification.
Consider starting a Certificate III/IV or Diploma in:
Individual Support
Community Services
Mental Health
These qualifications are highly regarded and show your commitment to the field.
3. Do your research.
Look up local providers, read online reviews, and talk to people you know who already work in the sector. Understanding the industry helps you find the right fit.
4. Reflect on your ‘why’.
Support work isn’t just a job — it’s a commitment to helping people live independently with dignity and choice. Ask yourself:
Am I doing this for the right reasons?
Can I be flexible and adaptable to support different needs?
Am I curious, open-minded and respectful of others' experiences?
Support work isn’t for everyone, but if it’s the right fit for you, it can be one of the most meaningful careers out there.
