Every year hundreds of native animals are injured, orphaned or displaced. You can be the second chance
they desperately need. Help save our wildlife by becoming a trained & registered rescuer &/or
transporter.

Wildlife rescuers are first responders; they attend to reports of wildlife in need of assistance. Rescuing
involves assessing, pouch checking, capturing, containing & transporting injured animals to a veterinary clinic or wildlife shelter. This is a hands-on role & will require you to attend many different situations, help a wide variety of native species & engage directly with members of the public.

Wildlife transporters ferry animals between rescuers, veterinarians and wildlife shelters. This role
requires minimal handling of wildlife as the animals are usually contained & ready for transport.

BASIC WILDLIFE TRAINING IS REQUIRED TO REGISTER WITH A WILDLIFE GROUP & RECEIVE CALL-OUT’S. Join the team by training & registering with an accredited wildlife shelter/training group near you:
• WILDLIFE VICTORIA
https://wildlifevictoria.org.au/volunteer/
• AUSTRALIAN WILDLIFE ASSISTANCE & RESCUE (AWARE)
https://www.awarewildlife.org.au/
• WARRIORS 4 WILDLIFE
https://training.warriors4wildlife.org/
• ANIMALIA WILDLIFE
https://www.animaliawildlife.org.au/wildlife-care-workshops.html

REQUIREMENTS & COMMITMENT
Valid driver’s license & access to reliable vehicle
Compassionate, patient & calm under pressure
Equipment required is minimal & depends upon your level of training.

Volunteering is very flexible you can choose the species you are able/trained to work with, the hours you are available & the areas you can travel to.

What a great morning planting 1100 trees and shrubs with a fantastic group of 45 volunteers in Bittern. Many hands make light work and we were treated with homemade brownies, cookies and a bbq. Special shoutout to the crew from Wetland & Wildlife Creations for your hole digging in really tough ground. Hopefully we will get some much needed rain in the coming days.

Wow what a day! 2 tree planting events, the first at the Hillview Reserve in Dromana, the second at the Bay Views Golf Course in Rosebud. Today’s numbers are amazing, over 70 volunteers at both events (we lost count 🤷) and around 2300 plants planted, plus the golf course has another 500 additional plants to plant. Thank you to all the volunteers, we couldn’t do it without you! Thank you to the Bayviews team, the Habitat Restoration Fund www.hrfund.org, Rotary Dromana, Wetland & Wildlife Creations and many others who made this day possible! This is how we save our wildlife, one plant 🌱 at a time!

⚠️ WARNING ⚠️ Graphic images of deceased koala and joey in comments

This week, yet another two koalas were killed on the Western Port Highway.

A breeding female koala and her male pouch joey were killed by a vehicle between Thornells Road and O’Neills Road, Tyabb. Once again, no one called to report the incident.

Their deaths bring the known toll to 25 koalas killed on Western Port Highway in just two years, with further deaths recorded on surrounding roads including Tyabb–Tooradin Road and Bungower Road.

This is not random. It is a repeated and preventable wildlife road toll.

These koalas cannot simply be “relocated.” This is their home - land they have occupied for generations, long before roads, fencing and development fragmented the landscape.

Habitat loss, fencing they cannot climb, vehicle traffic and human encroachment are forcing koalas to navigate dangerous obstacles just to reach food, shelter and safe habitat.

They don’t get warning of these changes. But we do.

We know koalas live here.
We know they are most active between dusk and dawn.
We know a koala could be sitting in a roadside tree - or already beginning a journey across the road.

We can be the difference.

Please slow down. Stay alert. Drive expecting wildlife could be there.

Small changes in awareness and driving behaviour can help save koalas’ lives.

And please understand — we do not share these photos lightly. We would far prefer to share beautiful photos of healthy koalas. But this is the reality for koalas along the Western Port Highway and surrounding roads.

Please share this post, create awareness and help us demand meaningful action before more koalas are killed.

In the event of an incident, please contact Wildlife Victoria on 8400 7300 or local wildlife carer in your area.

Oh it’s fun to be out tree planting again. We were back at a beautiful property in Shoreham adding another 550 to an older, big planting. The trees from previous years are growing well but our new little plants were sweating and so were we in these unseasonably warm temperatures. Now hoping for lots of rain tomorrow!

If you would like to come tree planting with us, please register for all our events at www.mpkoalas.org.au

If you would like to become a tree planting coordinator and lead our planting days on weekends or weekdays, please email us at [email protected]

Next Saturday we’re in Dromana and Rosebud, two events and over 2000 plants on the same day!

We’re baaaack!!! After weeks of unseasonably warm weather, the rains arrived just in time for our first planting day of the season, coinciding with Wild Koala Day Australia Thank you to all the amazing volunteers who braved the wind and rain to plant our first 550 plants of our planned 30,000 plants!

We had an incredible amount of interest in this first event, however we do need to limit participant numbers. We have planned and advertised sooo many events over the coming months, you will be able to find an event that suits you. We especially need lots of volunteers for a few of our larger properties in Flinders and Main Ridge! You can register for any of our events at www.mpkoalas.org.au

A huge thank you to Hastings Primary School for being so koala-conscious and helping raise awareness in the community today 🐨💚

We had two koalas in very vulnerable roadside locations with heavy traffic and the school’s efforts to alert others made a real difference. Both koalas were monitored throughout the day, and we’re hopeful they’ll move to safer habitat overnight.

Support and vigilance from local communities - just like Hastings Primary School - plays such an important role in keeping our wildlife safe. Every conversation, every sign and every moment of awareness truly counts.

Please remember to report your koala sightings, either via messaging us, or at mpkoalas.org.au

Thank you for caring and for being part of the solution 🙏
