🎗️ Ash Wednesday – February 16, 1983 🎗️
Today, February 16th, marks 43 years since one of the darkest days in our state’s history.
On Ash Wednesday, fires tore through Victoria and South Australia with unimaginable force. Seventeen firefighters lost their lives protecting their communities. Twelve of those firefighters perished together on a dirt track off St Georges Road in Upper Beaconsfield. Seven were members of our neighbouring brigade in Narre Warren. Five were from Panton Hill.
Today will be a day where many Victorians and South Australians, will pause, reflect, and honour the courage and sacrifice shown on that day.
The legacy of these 17
firefighters lives on everytime the call goes out, everytime the truck drives out the door, and in every firefighter who steps forward to serve.
We remember them. We honour them.
Today, tomorrow, and always. 🎗️
