🚒 Hazard Reduction Burn at Kearsley 🚁

Today, Rutherford Fire Station attended a Fire and Rescue NSW led Hazard Reduction (HR) burn near the township of Kearsley, supported by the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS).

A total of approximately 18 hectares was successfully treated as part of the operation. Supporting the burn was one of Rutherford's specialised capabilities, our Remote Pilot Aircraft System (RPAS). One of our qualified pilots deployed our drone to provide aerial surveillance of the burn, monitoring fire behaviour and conditions in real time.

This capability delivers valuable live intelligence to Incident Management personnel, enhancing situational awareness and supporting informed decision-making throughout the operation.

The Hazard Reduction burn was completed safely and successfully, with no issues encountered.

A great example of agencies working together and utilising modern technology to help reduce bush fire risk within our community.

🚨⏰ Daylight Saving is here! ⏰🚨

Don't forget, when the clock strikes 2:00am on Sunday 4 October, it's time to wind your clocks forward by one hour.

While you're changing your clocks, take a minute to change the batteries in your smoke alarms too. It's a simple job that could make a lifesaving difference when seconds count.

Think of it this way: your smoke alarm battery has probably worked harder all year than some of us have at the gym... give it the fresh start it deserves! 😅🔋

✅ Move your clocks forward 1 hour
✅ Test your smoke alarms
✅ Replace batteries if needed
✅ Sleep in confusion about what time it really is

Stay safe and enjoy the extra daylight! ☀️

🔥 Hazard Reduction – Cessnock Area

Yesterday our crews assisted the National Parks and Wildlife Service and NSW RFS Lower Hunter with a hazard reduction burn in the Cessnock area. This work plays a critical role in preparing the region for the upcoming fire season by reducing fuel loads and strengthening community protection.

With a challenging season expected, we encourage residents to take the time now to review their bushfire plans, prepare their properties, and stay connected to reliable information sources during periods of heightened fire danger.

We also captured a few photos throughout the day mostly of the work underway, with the occasional moment of light‑heartedness from the crew. Even during serious operations, maintaining morale is part of keeping a capable and resilient team.

Working alongside RFS and NPWS continues to strengthen our joint capability and ensures the region is better prepared for the months ahead.

EXTREME FIRE DANGER – MONDAY (Greater Hunter District)

⚠️🔥 Posted 7:04 PM – Sunday, 20 September

Extreme fire danger has been declared for the Greater Hunter tomorrow, with conditions expected to deteriorate quickly throughout the day.

Warm, very dry weather combined with moderate to fresh, gusty west to northwesterly winds will significantly elevate fire risk across the district. A cool, gusty southerly change is forecast to reach coastal areas around midday, pushing inland during the afternoon and evening — but fire danger will remain high ahead of this change.

Areas Affected (Greater Hunter LGAs)

🟧 Cessnock
🟧 Dungog
🟧 Lake Macquarie
🟧 Maitland
🟧 Muswellbrook
🟧 Newcastle
🟧 Port Stephens
🟧 Singleton
🟧 Upper Hunter

What You Need To Do Now

• Review your bush fire plan and make sure your property is fire ready.
• If a fire starts near you, take immediate action.
• If you are not fully prepared, relocate to a safer area well before fire activity approaches.
• Avoid or reconsider travel through bush fire risk areas.

A Total Fire Ban will be in place for the Greater Hunter from midnight.

🔥 Busy Few Days for Our Crews 🔥

It’s been a big stretch for everyone across the district, with a 2nd alarm house fire in Tenambit keeping multiple stations on the move.

At 12:35am on 18/09/26, crews from East Maitland, Morpeth, Maitland, and Rutherford fire stations responded to reports of a house fire in the Tenambit area.

On arrival, firefighters were met with an intense, fully involved blaze that had taken hold of a single‑storey home.

Crews got straight to work, attacking the fire and working to contain the spread. After several hours of hard, coordinated effort, the fire was finally brought under control — but unfortunately the home was completely destroyed.

A solid effort from all crews involved, and we extend our best wishes to the homeowners as they begin their recovery after such a devastating incident.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

🔥 Hazard Reduction – Black Hill (Cessnock LGA)

Today our crew from Rutherford Fire Station were invited by our mates at Lower Hunter Rural Fire Service (RFS) to assist with their planned hazard reduction burn at Black Hill, and we were proud to be part of it.

We’ve always had a strong, close working relationship with Lower Hunter RFS, and being asked to join them on the ground is something our crew genuinely values. These joint operations strengthen our teamwork, build capability across agencies, and help us support the community together.

Crews took advantage of favourable conditions to complete the hazard reduction, successfully treating around 39 hectares. Burning operations are now finished, though smoke and smouldering logs may remain visible over the next couple of days.

A solid day’s work, great teamwork, and plenty of laughs along the way.
