The Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) begins in the Mid-Western Regional Council area/ NSW RFS Cudgegong District on Thursday the 1st of October 2026.
If you haven't already, now is the time you must review your plans, prepare your property and have the important conversations with your family about what you will do on days of increased fire danger or if a fire should threaten your home!
During the BFDP, landowners and managers must obtain a Fire Permit from their local RFS brigade before lighting any fires, plus you must also notify your local fire authority and neighbours of your intent to burn at least 24 hours in advance. To obtain a Fire Permit you can contact your local brigade Permit Officer or the Cudgegong Fire Control Centre Monday- Friday on 02 6370 9800 or complete an online application
Fire is an important tool for managing fire risk and supporting farming operations, but it is crucial that conditions allow for safe burning and the necessary precautions are in place. Escaped burns can have devastating outcomes and can result in heavy penalties.
If a fire does escape, make sure you call Triple Zero (000) immediately so that emergency services can respond quickly and minimise the damage.

๐Ÿ”ฅ GET READY FOR THE FIRE SEASON ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Do you know your bush fire risk?

Take a walk around your property and have a look at it from a firefighterโ€™s perspective.

๐ŸŒณ What vegetation surrounds your home?
๐ŸŒพ Where are the areas of long grass or heavy fuel?
๐Ÿš’ Could a fire truck easily access your property?
๐Ÿก What areas around your home need attention?

Knowing your risk is the first step to getting ready. Not sure your risk and want to chat further to someone? Check out our previous post tagging the Brigades who are hosting events for Get Ready Weekend, this weekend!

Over the next few days, weโ€™ll share some simple jobs you can tackle to get ready for the fire season.

Today, AFAC News released the Bushfire Seasonal Outlook for Spring. NSW experienced unseasonably warm conditions over winter, while rainfall has been variable. With parts of northern and south-eastern NSW receiving below-average rainfall, these areas are entering spring drier than usual.

Forecasts for early spring continue to point to below-average rainfall and unusually warm conditions with fuels expected to continue drying across NSW. The highest risk is expected to be in northern and south-eastern NSW, as these areas are already rapidly drying out. Forested areas in these regions are experiencing high fuel loads and are dense and well-connected, which is of particular concern.

While fire risk is expected to be elevated through early spring, rainfall prospects for late spring into early summer have shifted to a slightly wetter outlook, although some uncertainty remains.

If you live, work, or travel through bush fire-prone areas, ensure you are prepared. Review and discuss your bush fire survival plan so you know what to do if threatened by fire.
