A quick reminder on Applying for Fire Permits 🔥

We know many of you are keen to get your pile burns done to clean up your properties, and we really appreciate the effort to prepare for the season!

However, please remember that applying for a fire permit does not mean you can start burning straight away.

Permits are completely free, but our volunteer permit officers need time to assess your application. This involves coming out to your property to inspect the proposed pile, check surrounding fuel loads, and make sure the burn can be conducted safely.

You cannot light a fire until your permit has been officially issued and you have notified the RFS and your Neighbours.

The permit process is all about ensuring fire safety for you and your neighbours during the bush fire season.

Even when your permit is active, remember the golden rules of burning safely:
Stick exactly to your permit conditions: These are tailored specifically to your property to keep your fire manageable.
Notify your neighbours and the RFS a minimum 24 hours before you burn
Always check the Fire Danger Rating
Never burn during a Total Fire Ban.

If in doubt, reach out to us or the Fire Control Centre before lighting up.

We are now at the beginning of The Bush Fire Danger Period. This is the peak season when warm temperatures, low humidity, and dry vegetation significantly increase the risk of rapid, uncontrollable wildfires.

The permit system during this period ensures burns are conducted safely under controlled conditions, protecting your home, family, and our community.

❗️Fire Permits are MANDATORY: A permit is required for burning activities during the Bush Fire Danger Period in RFS districts, and at all times in Fire and Rescue NSW districts statewide.

👉Permits are FREE & Easy to Get:
👉In a Rural Fire District? Apply online via the RFS website.
👉In a Fire and Rescue NSW District? Apply via the Fire and Rescue NSW website.
👉Always Notify Us Before Lighting Up: Even with a permit, you must notify us before you start burning. Submit your burn notification using our online form.
👉Additional rules may apply, including temporary weather-related fire bans.

❗️There are heavy penalties if you don't follow restrictions or rules.

This week is about one simple but important action: talking with your household about what you will do if a bush fire threatens.

Think local:

👉A bush fire doesn't need to reach your house to affect you.
👉Road closures, smoke, power outages and telecommunications interruptions can affect how you get home, collect children, contact family or leave the area.
👉Which roads would you use if your normal route wasn't available?

Review your bush fire survival plan so you know exactly what to do when a fire threatens your property.
