On Saturday 23 May, we marked National Reconciliation Week with our annual Flag Raising Ceremony and celebrated the winners of the Ellen José Student Reconciliation Awards 🎨

Congratulations to all our winners and finalists for their thoughtful and inspiring contributions.

National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) is a time to reflect on our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to consider how we can all contribute to reconciliation.

The awards honour the legacy of Torres Strait Islander Elder Ellen José (1951–2017), recognising young people in Bayside who explore reconciliation through art and writing.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the event such a meaningful and memorable occasion 🤝

The event is in line with Goal 5 of Bayside's Health and Inclusion Plan 2025 -2029, which includes celebrating Reconciliation and NAIDOC Week.

The Grassy Woodlands at Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve occupy approximately 25% of the terrestrial environment and is located in the northern section of the reserve. Planted with variable, mixed grass species, the area aims to mimic a natural a grassy woodland (EVC 175), considered endangered in Victoria.

The area provides an important foraging, nesting, breeding and roosting habitat for a wide range of woodland birds, insects, butterflies, moths, and small reptiles. As part of the grassy woodland design, Eucalyptus trees create a canopy to help protect the understorey.

To provide additional shade, we’re planting 4 Eucalyptus radiata (commonly known as the Narrow-leaf Peppermint) in the grassy woodlands, and bespoke tree guards will help to protect the new trees as they establish.

Last week we delivered the inaugural Bayside Youth Summit at Beaumaris Secondary College, in partnership with Beaumaris Secondary College and facilitated by Youth Leadership Academy Australia (YLAA).

Over 120 young people from Years 7–12 across six schools came together to build leadership skills, connect with others and share ideas for positive change💡

Young people played a key role throughout the day, leading conversations, working in teams and creating a space where everyone felt heard and empowered.

Bayside Mayor Cr Debbie Taylor-Haynes opened the summit, reinforcing Council’s commitment to valuing young people’s voices and working alongside them.

A big thank you to everyone who supported the summit, including Beaumaris Secondary College, YLAA, participating schools, young people, Peer Leaders and Bayside City Council staff 🙌

✨ Stay tuned for the ideas and more youth-led initiatives coming soon.

New Seal the Loop bins are here 🐟💙

Abandoned fishing tackle is one of the most harmful types of marine litter for seals.

Seals are regular visitors to the Bayside coastline, so reducing fishing gear left behind is especially important.

We’ve just installed a ’s Seal the Loop bin at Hampton Pier, making it easy for anglers to dispose of unwanted fishing line, hooks, sinkers and bait bags responsibly.

When fishing, you can also help by:

✔️ removing fishing line from the water if wildlife is nearby
✔️ cleaning fish away from the water’s edge
✔️ disposing of scraps in a rubbish bin
✔️ using a Seal the Loop bin for unwanted gear.

Let’s all do our bit 🦭♻️
