Sedgwick Fire Brigade - CFA Sedgwick Fire Brigade is a volunteer fire service with the Country Fire Authority (CFA) Victoria, Australia

Following a public meeting in November 1942 the Sedgwick Bushfire Brigade was founded. Firefighting equipment consisted of a canvas be**er per fire fighter and two rakes provided by the Forestry Commission. The Brigade now houses two fire-fighting tankers, a lighting plant, and a quick fill pump, and is supported by 35 trained volunteer firefighters. The Brigade not only attends fires and other emergencies on a local level: we have also participated in major fire events across Victoria, NSW and the ACT, and are increasingly involved in combined emergency services efforts such as flood relief.

πŸ”₯ Training for the Fire Season πŸš’

On Sunday, Sedgwick Brigade members came together for a morning of training and drills in preparation for the upcoming fire season.

As part of the training, members completed burnover drills, practising the procedures crews follow in the event of an emergency burnover while operating on the fireground.

It was great to see such a strong turnout from brigade members and a fantastic morning spent building skills, refreshing procedures and working together on the trucks.

A big thank you to everyone who attended! πŸ‘πŸš’

πŸš’Today, members took part in an Eppalock Group exercise alongside fellow brigades from across the group.πŸš’

The exercise provided crews with the opportunity to practise a range of different scenarios and build their skills in a realistic training environment.

One of our members was given the opportunity to step into the role of crew leader and later Incident Controller, gaining valuable experience in leadership, decision-making and incident management.

Throughout the day, crews worked through a number of scenarios, including a motor vehicle accident involving a casualty and downed powerlines, cooling a gas cylinder involved in fire, asset and exposure protection, and a structural interface scenario involving boosting operations and both direct and indirect attack techniques.

It was a valuable day of training, providing members with the opportunity to develop their skills, take on unfamiliar roles and work alongside other brigades within the Eppalock Group.

A big thank you to everyone involved in organising and participating in the exercise.

Last night, members from Sedgwick Fire Brigade headed to Castlemaine Fire Station for a valuable night of practical prop training. πŸš’πŸ”₯

It was a great opportunity for our members to build their skills, practise different techniques and gain some hands-on experience in a controlled training environment.

A big thank you to Castlemaine Fire Brigade for welcoming us and allowing us to use their facilities. We really appreciate the opportunity to train together and continue building our skills.

🚨 Changes to Bushfire Places of Last Resort 🚨

We’ve made two changes to local Bushfire Places of Last Resort (BPLR) for the upcoming 2026-2027 fire danger period.

Barrack Reserve picnic area will replace Holy Rosary Primary School Oval as Heathcote’s BPLR and Bendigo Showgrounds will be reinstated as a BPLR.

Bushfire Places of Last Resort (also known as Neighbourhood Safer Places) should only be used if all other plans have failed in a bushfire emergency.

They should not be considered as places to relocate to when leaving early as Emergency Services and support agencies will not be in place to provide assistance.

A BPLR should also not be confused with an Emergency Relief Centre which is activated during an emergency to provide immediate, short-term support for displaced people.

Bushfire Places of Last Resort in Greater Bendigo are located at:

β€’ Axedale Primary School Oval
β€’ Lansell Square Shopping Centre car park
β€’ Queen Elizabeth Oval
β€’ Canterbury Park car park and events area
β€’ Bendigo Showgrounds
β€’ Maiden Gully Primary School basketball courts
β€’ Lord's Raceway in Junortoun
β€’ Strathfieldsaye Community Hub - Club Court
β€’ Dower Park in Kangaroo Flat
β€’ Redesdale Recreation Reserve oval
β€’ Barrack Reserve picnic area in Heathcote

If you shelter at a BPLR, you will need to bring your own food and water, protective clothing, pet food, mobile phone, radio, first aid and medications.

Today, Sedgwick CFA responded to support Mandurang CFA and FRV Pumper 73B following reports of a structure fire in Mandurang South.

Both Sedgwick trucks turned out and arrived on scene quickly. Thankfully, the quick-thinking property owner was able to extinguish the fire just before crews arrived, preventing it from spreading further.

A great outcome, and many thanks to all members and crews who attended.

Sunday morning truck and equipment checks were carried out at the station this morning.

While Sedgwick Tanker 1 is undergoing scheduled maintenance, the brigade is currently using a District spare tanker. This morning’s checks gave members a great opportunity to look over the spare tanker and familiarise themselves with its equipment and setup.

Regular checks and familiarisation help ensure our crews are ready when the call comes. πŸš’

πŸš’ Sedgwick Brigade Training Night πŸ”₯

On Tuesday night, members of the Sedgwick Fire Brigade came together for another great training night, focusing on Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVAs) and the correct use of fire extinguishers and fire blankets.

It was a fantastic hands-on session, giving members the opportunity to practise important skills and refresh their knowledge in a range of situations we may encounter.

It was great to see so many members in attendance and getting involved throughout the evening.

A big thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the night a success!

On Tuesday night, the brigade held its Annual General Meeting. Each year at the AGM, members vote on who they would like to lead and support the brigade in a range of key roles.

Following this year’s AGM, we are pleased to announce our new and returning brigade leaders:

Captain: Josh King
1st Lieutenant: Andrew Semmens
2nd Lieutenant: Quentin Cook
3rd Lieutenant: Sam Read
4th Lieutenant & Secretary: Paul Harris
Communications Officer: Ben Drechsler
Health and Safety Officer: Paul Kitch
Treasurer: Gary Moreland
Community Engagement Officer: Julian Hall

The brigade thanks and congratulates these members on their positions, and we acknowledge their continued hard work and commitment to protecting our local communities.

If you are interested in joining CFA, or have kids who love the fire brigade, we are at the station every Sunday at 9:00am checking the trucks and equipment to make sure everything is working as it should.

Feel free to drop by, say hello and meet the team β€” our members are always happy to have a chat. πŸš’
