Despite the wet weather and rain throughout the week, the Nowra Mitigation crews have been keeping busy at Bawley Point NSP!

The crews have managed to make a big dent in the works, pushing ahead whenever conditions have allowed and making some great progress on site.

A big effort from everyone involved, showing that a bit of rain won’t stop the team from getting the job done!

A huge thank you to the Bawley Point Brigade and the local community for their ongoing support and cooperation while these important works are underway.

A Total Fire Ban will be in place tomorrow, Monday 12 October 2026, for the Greater Sydney area with forecast Extreme fire danger and the Greater Hunter area with forecast High fire danger. Warm and windy conditions are forecast across parts of the state, increasing the fire danger.

Take action now. Know your fire risk and what you will do if fire threatens. Report all unattended fires to Triple Zero (000).

WORKS HAVE JUST BEGUN – BAWLEY POINT

The Nowra Mitigation Crews have just begun important NSP (Neighbourhood Safer Place) works at Bawley Point Rural Fire Brigade Station.

These works are about more than just maintaining a site — they’re about supporting our community and helping ensure a safer place is available for residents should they ever need it during a bush fire.

Our local communities are at the heart of everything we do. The NSW RFS works year-round to prepare, protect and support communities, with crews undertaking important mitigation and preparedness works to help reduce risk and improve resilience.

A big thank you to the Bawley Point Brigade for their support and assistance, and to the Bawley Point community for their ongoing support and commitment to bush fire preparedness.

It’s through the combined efforts of our volunteers, mitigation crews and local communities that we can continue to build stronger, safer and more resilient communities.

The Nowra Mitigation Crews look forward to continuing these works and working alongside the Bawley Point Brigade and community to help make this NSP a safe and well-maintained place for those who may need it.

NOWRA MITIGATION CREW – SUPPORTING OUR SHOALHAVEN COMMUNITY THROUGH THE AIDER PROGRAM

Over the past few weeks, the Nowra Mitigation Crew has been out and about across the Shoalhaven, completing numerous AIDER works for members of our community.

The AIDER program is an important part of the NSW Rural Fire Service’s commitment to helping some of our more vulnerable community members prepare for the threat of bush fire.

So, what is AIDER?

AIDER – Assist Infirm, Disabled and Elderly Residents – is a free, one-off service provided by the NSW RFS to eligible residents who may have limited support available to help them undertake basic bush fire preparation around their home.

The program is designed to assist eligible people who may be older, living with a disability, or receiving community assistance, and who live on bush fire prone land or in an area exposed to significant bush fire threat.

Depending on the individual property and assessment, AIDER works can include:

🌿 Clearing gutters
🌿 Removing leaf and tree debris
🌿 Trimming vegetation and branches close to the home
🌿 Thinning vegetation around buildings
🌿 Mowing or slashing long grass
🌿 Other suitable basic vegetation and fuel management works

These jobs might seem like simple tasks, but for someone who is unable to safely complete them themselves, they can make a real difference to their ability to prepare their property for bush fire.

For the Nowra Mitigation Crew, AIDER isn’t just about vegetation management. It’s about supporting people in our community, reducing bush fire risk and helping residents feel safer and more confident around their homes.

Our crews work with residents to assess the property, identify appropriate works and provide practical assistance where the AIDER program criteria are met.

🚒 If you, a family member, friend or someone you support may benefit from the AIDER program, don’t hesitate to find out more.

NOWRA MITIGATION – GRASS CURING ASSESSMENTS

Every Monday throughout the fire season, the Nowra Mitigation Crews are out and about conducting our weekly grass curing photo and fuel-state assessments.

These observations help provide up-to-date information for the Australian Fire Danger Rating System (AFDRS) and the Fuel State Editor, supporting accurate fire danger information across the region.

It’s all part of the important work happening behind the scenes to help keep our communities informed and prepared.

FIRE PERMITS SUSPENDED – Sunday 20th September 2026
The Shoalhaven is forecast to experience HIGH fire danger conditions on Sunday 20th September 2026. As a result, all fire permits issued by the RFS have been suspended in the Shoalhaven for this time.
These conditions can create a real fire risk across our landscape. It's incumbent upon all of us to be cautious with the use of fire.
ONE EMBER CAN END IT - Embers from a fire can spread quickly and quite a distance, putting communities well away from the main fire at risk.

🚒 NOWRA MITIGATION | SAFE WORKING ON ROOFS TRAINING 🏠🦺

Today the Nowra Mitigation crew were at Shoalhaven FCC getting stuck into some Safe Working on Roofs training.

A great opportunity for the team to build their skills, refresh our safety practices and make sure we’re prepared to work safely when the job takes us above ground level.

💪 Train hard. Work safe. Go home safe.

A big thanks to the team at Shoalhaven FCC for having us!

🚒 Nowra Mitigation in Jindabyne 🚒

Over the past few days, crews from Nowra Mitigation have been working hard in the Jindabyne region carrying out maintenance and mitigation works along the Crackenback Fire Trail.

With the valuable assistance of Cooma Mitigation and the Wollondibby RFS appliance, crews have been improving access and helping ensure the trail remains operational for firefighting and emergency response activities ahead of future fire seasons.

These works play an important role in supporting firefighter safety, improving access for appliances, and strengthening preparedness across the region’s remote bushfire-prone areas.

A huge thank you to all personnel involved for their teamwork, effort, and dedication out on the ground. 👏🔥
