🔋 Battery Charging Safety – Fire Can Spread in Minutes 🔥

Somerville CFA, alongside crews from Tyabb CFA, Somers CFA and Baxter CFA, recently responded to a significant shed fire believed to have started from a battery being charged.

🚒 Somerville crews were on scene within just 6 minutes of the initial call. Despite this rapid response, the fire had already developed significantly, and unfortunately the owner lost everything stored within the shed.

It’s a confronting reminder of just how quickly fire can develop and spread, particularly in sheds and garages where fuels, tools, vehicles and other combustible materials may be stored.

When charging batteries:

* 🔋 Always use the correct manufacturer-approved charger.
* 👀 Avoid leaving batteries charging unattended or overnight.
* 🏠 Charge in a well-ventilated area away from combustible materials.
* 🚫 Never charge batteries on soft or flammable surfaces.
* ⚠️ Stop using batteries that are swollen, damaged, leaking, unusually hot or producing unusual smells or noises.
* 🔌 Never use damaged chargers, leads or batteries.
* 🚨 Make sure you have working smoke alarms around areas where batteries are regularly charged.

Whether it’s a battery for a power tool, e-bike, scooter, mower or other rechargeable equipment, take the risk seriously.

If a battery begins smoking, hissing, swelling or catches fire, get out, keep others away and call Triple Zero (000).

A big thank you to all crews who assisted at this incident, and a special shoutout to Bayswater CFA, who provided important behind-the-scenes support by refilling more than 20 Breathing Apparatus (BA) cylinders used during firefighting operations. 👏🚒

Incidents like this are a team effort, and that logistical support helps keep our firefighters working safely on the fireground.

🔋 Charge safely. Fire can spread in minutes.

Some people start their day with a coffee ☕️ we started ours with a car fire 🔥🚘

Called in just after 6AM, the fire had already spread to nearby grass and trees. Fortunately some early risers spotted it and called 000.

Luckily it was just next door at the railway station so we were on scene and had the fire contained within a few minutes 🚒

If starting your day keeping your community safe (then having a coffee) sounds good, we are recruiting day time firefighters now! Shoot us a DM or apply on cfa.vic.gov.au
