We're reminding Tasmanians to take simple steps now to reduce their bushfire risk before summer arrives.

Forecast warmer and drier conditions are expected to increase bushfire risk in the months ahead.

Don’t wait until it’s too late:
πŸ”₯ Know your bushfire risk
🌳 Clean up yards and paddocks
πŸ‚ Clear roof gutters and remove flammable waste from around your home
🏘️ Create and maintain a defendable space by keeping grass short, pruning vegetation and reducing fuel around your home.
πŸ—’οΈ Make and practice your bushfire plan

It's also important to stay informed.

Make sure you know how to access warnings and alerts through TasALERT and the TasALERT app.

For information on preparing your property, visit www.fire.tas.gov.au.

Tasmanians are being encouraged not to let cooler weather conditions create a false sense of security, with elevated fire danger forecast for parts of the state, particularly along the East Coast, tomorrow and later this week.

While rain, hail and even snow are forecast for some areas tomorrow, a high fire danger rating is forecast for North East, East Coast, Midlands, South East, Central North and Furneaux Islands, with dry fuels and periods of strong winds continuing to create conditions that could support fast-moving fires.

A High Fire Danger rating means there is a heightened risk, and people should be alert for fires in their area, and decide what they will do if a fire starts.

Tasmania Fire Service Deputy Chief Officer Matt Lowe said the forecast weather highlighted that bushfire risk can still exist even when some parts of the state experience colder and wetter conditions.

"People may see rain or colder temperatures and assume the fire risk has eased across Tasmania, but that's not necessarily the case," Deputy Chief Officer Lowe said.

"Parts of the East Coast remain dry and are expected to experience elevated fire danger this week. Combined with windy conditions, any fire that starts has the potential to spread quickly."

"Tasmania Fire Service and partner agencies are ready to respond to incidents, but we need everyone to play their part in preventing fires from starting in the first place."

"We're asking people to take care when using anything that could spark a fire and to ensure any campfires, fire pits or recent burn-offs are fully extinguished. Even after rain, embers can remain active and reignite when conditions become favourable."

β€œThe current conditions are a timely reminder to prepare for the months ahead.”

"Now is a good opportunity to review your bushfire plan, understand the risks in your local area and make sure your property is prepared before the fire season becomes more active."

β€œIf you see a fire, don’t assume a fire has already been reported, and call Triple Zero (000) if you see smoke, flames, or signs of a fire – you could be the first person reporting an incident.”

Tasmanians are encouraged to visit bushfire.tas.gov.au for bushfire preparedness information and to create or update their Bushfire Plan.

πŸ”₯ Tasmanians are being urged to take extra caution against bushfires over the coming days, with increased fire danger weather forecast for several parts of the state on Saturday.

A high fire danger rating has been forecast for North East, East Coast, Midlands, Upper Derwent Valley, South East and Central Plateau districts due to warmer, dry weather and gusty westerly winds.

These conditions mean that fires can start easily and spread quickly.

While there are currently no fire restrictions in place and the Fire Permit Period has not yet commenced, we're asking the community to take a few simple steps to help keep Tasmania safe:

βœ… Check any campfires, burn-offs or fire pits lit in recent days or weeks and make sure they are fully extinguished. Remember: soak it, stir it, soak it again.
βœ… Review your bushfire survival plan so you know what you'll do if a fire starts.
βœ… Stay informed through the TasALERT app, TasALERT or ABC Local Radio.
βœ… If you see smoke, flames, or a fire that appears to have reignited, don't assume someone else has reported it. Call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

We're working hard to keep the community safe, but everyone has a role to play in reducing fire risk.

Firefighters are urging residents, particularly in rural communities, to check for fire threats posed by vermin nests in vehicles.

Tasmania Fire Service recently attended a fire at a Latrobe-area property in which a tractor sustained significant damage, after a nest built in the engine bay caught fire.

There have been other callouts to fires involving farm equipment and vehicles, with nests built by birds or rodents catching alight once the vehicle has started.

TFS District Officer Jaron Oosterloo encouraged drivers and vehicle owners to check vehicles for vermin nests that could become a fire hazard.

β€œIt is a problem that we see at different times of the year, and particularly if vehicles have been unused for a while or sitting idle,” District Officer Oosterloo said.

β€œVermin such as rats and mice, or birds, like to get into the engine or exhaust area of the vehicle, where it’s warm and dry, and make their nests.

β€œThese nests are often built out of grass, twigs, or paper and those types of materials that can be highly flammable. Nests can catch fire quickly the next time the vehicle is started.”

District Officer Oosterloo said people were often unsuspecting of the fire threat, so it was timely to do a quick maintenance check. Vermin can also be responsible for unexpected electrical faults caused by damaged or chewed wires.

β˜€οΈ CLOCKS FORWARD. SUMMER MODE ON. FIRE SAFETY CHECK. ⏰πŸ”₯

Daylight saving starts tomorrow, which means longer evenings, warmer days and more time spent outdoors around the pool or at the beach. πŸ–οΈπŸŠ

But before you switch into summer mode, there’s one more important job to add to the list!

When you move your clocks forward one hour tomorrow, take a few minutes to make sure your home is fire safe.

πŸ”₯ Test your smoke alarms

πŸ”‹ Change your smoke alarm batteries

🏠 Review your home fire escape plan

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Make sure everyone in your household knows what to do if there’s a fire

It only takes a few minutes, but those few minutes could make all the difference and may even save a life.

πŸš’ Remember: fire safety has no season.

Stay safe, enjoy the longer days and don’t forget to spring forward! β˜€οΈβ°
