The Inala Jurassic Garden is an educational facility highlighting the Gondwanan connections of a range of living plant families whose ancient ancestors thrived in the Jurassic period when the Gondwanan Supercontinent started splitting apart (about 185 million years ago) to form the southern land-masses that we now know as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, South America and New Caledonia.

Any guesses on this underwhelming looking species? It's rather special we think, not least because it's an endemic to a small area of higher-elevation rainforest in Queensland's Wet Tropics. It's a Tooth-billed Bowerbird of course! Interestingly it is our only bowerbird (excluding catbirds) that doesn't build a bower. Rather, it cleverly arranges leaves in a 'court' on the forest floor, and this is where the magic happens! This gem is one of the 4 possible bowerbirds (excluding Spotted Catbird) that you can see in the Wet Tropics, and most spectacular among these must be Golden Bowerbird!

Our annual Wet Tropics tour runs in the comfortable winter months (from 17 - 26 July 2027) and adjoins our Papua New Guinea tour for those looking to add Birds-of-Paradise to their lists. Click on the link in the bio for more information.

Is this the Black-shouldered or the rare Letter-winged Kite? Well, this image shows the diagnostics beautifully, so it's clearly the latter! Letter-winged have a bold black line through the underwing, and an oval eye patch with not a sniff of an eye-brow extending behind the eye. Interestingly, they are very much a boom or bust species with numbers increasing rapidly when rodent numbers (esp. Long-haired Rat) are high, and crashing in drought years when rodent numbers fall. Our guide Ramit did well to get this stunning shot on our South-west Queensland tour earlier this year.

Our inaugural December tour to Lord Howe is a guaranteed departure and looks set to be a fantastic tour. Pictured here are three of the possible tour highlights: Black-winged Petrel, Lord Howe Woodhen, and the very smart Sooty Tern. Other goodies include the elegant White Tern, Grey Ternlet (Noddy), and Kermadec Petrel. Oh yes, and the scenery is rather breathtaking too! Join the experienced and wonderfully knowledgeable Steve Davidson on this discovery of one of Australia's offshore gems! The tour runs 12 - 18 December 2026.

We often associate parrots with their hefty beaks. Not so our very own grass parrots (genus Neophema). Just look at the bill barely breaking the facial profile on this gorgeous Blue-winged Parrot! The 6 members of this endemic genus manage to eat a variety of seeds, fleshy grass tips, flowers etc. with these rather flat bills. Impressive stuff! Sadly, the genus also includes one of our most endangered birds - Orange-bellied Parrot, but it also includes a parrot that breeds in rock crevices on islands (the delightful Rock Parrot), you cant make this stuff up!

Cape York is a rather special place! Our guide Yu Ota shared these pics with us from our successful August tours. Pictured are the fabulous Palm Cockatoo (amazingly their beak is so large and clunky it cant fully close), and the sought-after Red Goshawk. Other highlights included the rather sweet Yellow-billed Kingfisher, Magnificent Riflebird, Fawn-breasted Bowerbird, Papuan Eclectus and the quirky Trumpet Manucode to name a few. We also enjoyed some great reptiles (Green Python!), and mammals (the striking Spotted Cuscus!) ensuring the region lived up to it's reputation as a must-see destination!
