Social media has changed the way we talk about mental health.
From relatable memes to self-diagnosis videos and “healing” advice, some content can help people feel seen, while others may spread misinformation or unrealistic expectations.
We interviewed the team and experts at Mental Health Foundation Australia to hear their honest thoughts on the social media hype around mental health content 📱🎙️
How do they decide what to trust online?
What kind of content do they usually come across?
And what would they change about mental health content on social media today?

Spending time with your loved ones doesn’t mean you have to spend money. What matters most is making precious memories.
1 in 3 Australians experience loneliness. Loneliness doesn’t just mean being isolated, you can feel lonely around people if your social needs aren’t being met. It can have significant impacts on your physical health.
An important way to combat this is to spend intentional time with those you care about.
Catch up with your family or friends this weekend and try out these free and easy ideas:
1. Do art together
No matter your skill level, doing art together is a fun way to de-stress and catch up with people. You could draw, paint, do origami or just craft something with stuff you have at home.
2. Visit a park
Getting some fresh air in a new or well-loved park gives you a chance to walk and talk. If you wanted something more to do you could bring a game or some cards and just play.
3. Visit a FREE art gallery
Many art galleries have free entry. In Melbourne these galleries host free exhibitions: NGV International, ACMI, Craft Victoria, Tolarno Galleries, Art and Heritage Collection Tour and more.
4. Check out local events
No matter your interests, people host free events ranging from nature walks to festivals to hobby groups and exhibitions.

National Reconciliation Week begins today, we would like to acknowledge all First Nations people and continue to support community involvement in the next steps of Australia’s reconciliation journey.
This year’s theme, All In, is a reminder that reconciliation is a reminder for all of us to listen, learn, and take meaningful action every day. We remain committed to supporting stronger relationships, respect, and shared responsibility.

Around 1 in 100 Australians live with schizophrenia, with symptoms often more commonly experienced by men than women.
This Schizophrenia Awareness Week, we’re shining a light on the power of peer support, how it can make a meaningful difference by creating a safe, non-judgmental space where people feel heard, understood, and supported by others with similar experiences.
Our Free Hearing Voices Support Group offers a supportive community where people can share experiences openly and feel empowered through connection and peer understanding: https://supportgroup.mhfa.org.au/hearing-voices-support-group

Trying one of these strange but effective grounding techniques can be just the sensory shock you need to break out of your daily routines.
If you find that you struggle to do usual mindfulness activities, sensory shocks might be just what you need. Instead of trying to calm yourself by noticing the world around you, force yourself to focus your energy on the present moment.
Sometimes we work so hard just to get by that we can forget to take a moment to smell the roses. It is so essential to remember to stop and appreciate even the small things in our daily lives.
Being grounded means that you are the one in control of your actions, instead of letting your emotions control you.
