Stanley Fire Brigade.
It is Spring – the days are getting longer and warmer. We have been fortunate to have some pretty descent rain in recent weeks, but Summer is fast approaching. Minimum temperatures are well above average and most would agree that it has been a mild Winter. It is time to start getting ready for bushfire season.
The role of the Stanley Fire Brigade is to support our town in the event of a fire but to also help everyone get ready. We don’t wish to exaggerate the risks of living in a bushfire prone area or unnecessarily scare people. In the coming months we will be sharing information on our page and in forums such as the Nine Mile News to help you to get ready.
We also wish to recreate “The List”
In 2024, the Stanley Fire Brigade received an award from the Victorian Government for Community Engagement. The award recognised the creation of a list with information on Stanley residents that was invaluable when the bushfires descended on our town in 2003. We created another list in 2006 and again in 2009, leading up to the bushfire seasons.
The 2021 census identified over 350 individuals living in Stanley in under 200 properties ranging from farms/smaller holdings and smaller residential style buildings closer to the town centre. In past years over 90% of residents participated.
The list identified who was living where, a means of contact in an emergency, and your intention to - evacuate or stay and defend, with an opportunity to identify people who may be more vulnerable or at risk.
We also used the list to track people who have chosen to leave early / evacuate in the event of a Catastrophic Warning or when there is actual active fire in the area.
It would also be good to know if you are involved with a local fireguard group or have made preparations as a private operator with fire suppression equipment/appliances.
If you agree to share your details with us all information collected will be handled with sensitivity and confidentiality and not shared beyond the Stanley Brigade and would only be used in cases of emergency.
