Are you prepared for bushfire season? 1 October (next week) marks the start of the Bush Fire Danger Period, but we are already seeing increased fire activity.
A few things to consider:
- Fire Permits are always required in Newcastle LGA, and will be required after 1 October in Port Stephens LGA.
- Prepare your home e.g. clean out your gutters, trim overhanging trees, remove flammable material from around your home, make sure you have a reliable water source (i.e. sturdy hose/s). Burning embers can set your home on fire.
- Agree on a Fire Plan with your friends and family. Know bush fire alert levels (Advice, Watch and Act, Emergency Warning), keep up to date on hazards, traffic and air quality alerts, discuss and agree on a plan, have your emergency supplies ready (e.g. medication, cash, water), determine a safe place in your neighbourhood.
- Wherever you are, understand that smoke exposure is harmful to your health, even for healthy people. Exposure has whole-of-body impacts, affecting every major organ in the body. During poor air quality events close all windows and doors, block gaps, recirculate air, consider HEPA filtration for inside and P2 masks when outside and remember to fully ventilate the home and clean everything once the risk has passed.
On Monday 446 Stockton responded to a bushfire in the mangroves near Stockton bridge. Grateful to NSW National Parks Fire team and RFS Salt Ash for their assistance. Our urban pumper P446 is not able to access areas with unsealed surfaces. Support the fire service by asking NSW Government to fund upgrades to our fleet 😁
