Could a fire truck access your home in an emergency?

When bush fires occur, firefighters need safe and reliable access to your property.
Truck sizes can vary, but a good consideration is our Cat 1 tanker which can be up to 7.8 metres long, 2.5 metres wide, and require a turning circle of approximately 22 metres.

Overgrown vegetation, narrow access tracks, low branches, soft ground, or locked gates can delay emergency response and place crews at risk.

Inspect your property access before fire season and ensure emergency vehicles can enter and exit safely. Good access helps firefighters protect your home, your family, and your community.

The NSW Rural Fire Service recommends property access tracks and driveways have:
• A minimum width of 3.5 metres.
• A vertical clearance of 4 metres from overhanging branches or structures.
• Adequate turning space for large fire appliances.
• All weather surfaces capable of supporting heavy vehicles.
• Clearly accessible gates and entrances.
Clear access can help emergency services reach your property quickly when it matters.

🚁 WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITHOUT FIGHTING FIRES?

You can still play a vital role in protecting our communities by volunteering with NSW RFS - Mid Coast Aviation Brigade based in Taree.

Aviation plays a crucial role in bushfire operations, with volunteers supporting activities such as:

🔥 Supporting aircraft operating on bushfires
💧 Replenish aircraft with water and retardant during water-bombing operations
📍 Helping coordinate and monitor aircraft operations in the air and on the ground
⛽ Supporting aircraft refuelling and ground operations
📡 Assisting with communications and operational support

You don’t have to be a firefighter to make a difference. If you’re interested in aviation, emergency services or simply want to give something back to your community, there’s an opportunity to get involved.

🔥 HIGH Fire Danger Rating – Saturday 5 September

A HIGH Fire Danger Rating is forecast for the Mid Coast District tomorrow.

With warmer and drier conditions, residents are encouraged to remain alert, know what they will do if a fire starts, and closely monitor any recent burns.

Be ready to act and stay up to date with local conditions.

04/09/2026

Over the past few days, crews have responded to numerous escaped burns across the state. With elevated fire conditions forecast across the weekend, we are urging residents to take extra care when conducting your burns.

While fire agencies and land managers will be closely monitoring areas where hazard reduction burns have been conducted earlier this week, we are also asking landholders to closely monitor their own burns.

If you are in an area currently within its Bush Fire Danger Period, you must have a permit from your local brigade and notify your neighbours and the RFS at least 24 hours before conducting your burn.

Don’t put your community at risk. For more information on safe burning, visit the website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/safeburning

Today, 27 Local Government Areas (LGA) commence their Bush Fire Danger Period, with several areas beginning a month earlier than normal due to the prevailing dry conditions.

Additionally, two LGA's will commence their Bush Fire Danger Period on 14 September, which is two weeks earlier than normal.

Residents and land holders should ensure they understand the rules around the use of fire. Along with required fire permits, you must also notify your local fire authority and neighbours of your intent to burn 24 hours in advance.

Know the risks for your area, have a bush fire survival plan and discuss what you and your family will do if threatened by fire. For more information, visit the website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/BFDP
