Every click, login and online account comes with choices about privacy and security. Helping students make informed decisions starts with giving them the knowledge and skills to protect themselves online.

This Cyber Security Awareness Month, we’re highlighting how the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies helps students to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to navigate the digital world safely and securely.

Privacy and security are core concepts in Digital Technologies. Students learn how to manage personal data, understand how online applications and systems use their information, and apply effective security practices- from strong passwords and unique passphrases to multi-factor authentication.

Teachers can access ACARA’s free Digital Technologies in focus resources https://brnw.ch/21x6dsP with practical materials to support teaching about privacy and security.

Music gives students a chance to create, experiment, perform and find their own voice 🎵

This International Music Day, we’re celebrating the many ways music comes to life in classrooms across Australia.

Through the Australian Curriculum: Music, students learn as musicians and audiences by listening, composing and performing, while discovering different styles, traditions and cultures and developing their own creative voice.

Supporting learning for Autistic students and students with ADHD is part of everyday teaching — but what does that actually look like across Australia?

The Australian Education Research Organisation - AERO is running a short national survey to better understand everyday teaching practices, educator confidence, and what support makes a difference for learning.

This is not an evaluation. No schools or jurisdictions will be compared or ranked. Responses are reported at a national level only.

Latin and Classical Greek may be ancient languages, but there’s plenty to discover in the classroom today.

ACARA’s free Professional Learning Hub includes three courses designed to help teachers explore Classical Greek and Latin in the Australian Curriculum.

The courses take teachers through the rationale, aims and structure of Classical Languages, explore achievement standards and curriculum content, and provide practical teaching and learning scenarios and resources to support classroom planning.

Along the way, teachers can explore how learning Classical Languages can strengthen students’ understanding of English vocabulary and literacy, develop critical and analytical thinking, and deepen their understanding of history and culture.

The courses are free, flexible and available online through ACARA’s Professional Learning Hub.

Teachers across Australia, your experience matters.

The Australian Teacher Workforce Survey is now open, giving teachers the opportunity to share their experiences of working in the profession.

Led by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) the survey takes around 15 minutes to complete and helps build a national picture of Australia’s teaching workforce. The data helps inform national policies across areas including workload, resources, career development and leadership pathways.

ACARA is proud to support the survey and encourage teachers across the country to have their say.
Closing dates vary by state and territory, with surveys open through to November.

50% of Year 6 students. 37% of Year 10 students.

That’s the proportion of Australian students who reached the proficient standard in ICT literacy in the latest National Assessment Program, with results dropping since the previous assessment in 2022.

But there are some interesting findings behind the numbers.
Students told us they’re regularly using digital tools and AI, nearly all have access to reliable internet and a computer or tablet at home, and around 9 in 10 Year 10 students reported learning at school how to identify and report cyberbullying and image-based abuse.

In a new article for Education Matters Mag, ACARA CEO Stephen Gniel looks at what the results tell us about the difference between simply using technology and developing the skills to use it effectively, safely and critically.

With AI already being a common part of students’ lives, those skills matter more than ever.

Literacy opens doors to learning and opportunities to participate in the world around us.

This International Literacy Day marks 60 years of global action to advance literacy, with the 2026 theme, “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity”.

The theme recognises the important role literacy plays not only in individual learning and opportunity, but in helping people build knowledge, participate in their communities and contribute to a more peaceful and sustainable future.

In the Australian Curriculum: English, students learn the literacy skills of listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing, creating and understanding texts across a range of contexts. They apply and further develop these skills in other learning areas, supporting students to understand and communicate ideas, engage critically with information and build the skills they need for learning and life.

Teachers can explore a range of Australian Curriculum resources to support literacy learning in the classroom, links in the first comment.

A simple check-in can mean more than we might realise.

R U OK? Day is this Thursday 10 September, the message is to Ask R U OK? Any Day, because the people around us experience life’s ups and downs all year round.

9 in 10 people who have been asked “are you OK?” say the conversation made them feel grateful, cared about and supported.

Schools can play an important role in helping young people build the skills to understand and support their own wellbeing and that of others.

The Australian Curriculum Mental health and wellbeing curriculum connection supports teachers to explore these skills with students, including building a sense of belonging, managing relationships and accessing reliable health and safety information.

This Indigenous Literacy Day, we celebrate the stories, languages and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year’s theme, Country Is Our Teacher, highlights the important role Country plays in learning, culture and connection, including how knowledge about land, language, seasons, plants and animals is shared across generations.

Teachers can bring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures to life across the learning areas through the Australian Curriculum cross-curriculum priority, while the Indigenous Literacy Foundation has free resources to help schools celebrate Indigenous Literacy Day.

Our CEO Stephen Gniel joined the University of Melbourne’s Talking Teaching podcast to reflect on his 30-year career in education, from starting out as a primary school teacher to now leading curriculum, assessment and reporting at a national level.

Stephen’s conversation with Dr Sophie Specjal explores the complexity and skill of teaching, the importance of keeping teachers and students at the centre of education policy and his view of the Australian Curriculum as our shared “promise to children” about what we want them to learn and experience at school.

Stephen also discusses why strong curriculum, assessment and reporting belong together, and how foundational literacy and numeracy, alongside critical thinking, problem solving and digital literacy, are increasingly important in preparing young Australians for their future.
