Confused about close associates? Basically, a close associate is any person involved in a security business who can influence its conduct or operation. But who might that apply to? It could be:

• Company secretaries
• All directors and others in a position of power or financial influence over the business’s operations
• Directors, company secretaries and others in a position of power or financial influence over the business operations of any shareholding companies.

SLED’s investigators conducted 13 compliance audits during May and finalised 24 investigations.

SLED refused 39 security licence applications in May and revoked 23 licences.

Have you ever heard about prescribed offences? If a licensee commits one or more of these offences, SLED is legally required to revoke their licence. Here’s the full list:

• Violence, fraud, dishonesty or stealing
• Robbery
• Riot or affray
• Stalking or intimidation
• Terrorism
• Possession or use of a firearm or other weapon
• Prohibited drugs, prohibited plants, psychoactive substances or prescribed restricted substances (including drug driving)
• Organised criminal groups.

The proposed remake of the Security Industry Regulation 2016 is open for public consultation until Friday 3 July 2026. The draft includes several key changes that will affect NSW security licensees, including:

• the addition of a three-year licence term for both operative and Master licences
• removal of the $65 fee for certain amendments where a licence reissue is not required
• expansion of some disqualifying offences.

Do you want to carry on cash-in-transit activities? Whether you’re going to be armed or not, you must complete the required training and apply for a Class 1C (Cash-in-Transit Officer) licence. If you’re going to be armed, you’ll also need a Class 1F (Armed Guard) licence. It might sound obvious, but we get this a lot: if you’ve just applied for a security licence, DON’T LEAVE THE COUNTRY. You can’t be fingerprinted or photographed from overseas. You must be in NSW. If you’re leaving the country, don’t apply until you get back.

Adding a subclass to your licence? If there are training requirements for that subclass, you must include the qualifications with your application. No training, no subclass.
