The rain changed their plans yesterday so Steve and Bill made their own adventure. They took a first look at the new airport before it opens Sunday, toured the Cecil Park range, and Steve lit up seeing kangaroos everywhere! 🦘 A brisket pie in Cobbity topped off a great day together 🄧

Our Monday and Tuesday cooking programs were full of great food and growing confidence! On Monday, our participants shopped for groceries and cooked chicken fricassee from a family cookbook, chicken risotto and peanut butter energy balls, while Kayla practised her makeup skills on Kaylee. On Tuesday, they cooked their own breakfasts before making a penne lasagne, arancini from Monday’s leftover risotto, sticky date pudding and homemade pizza.

Our participants also pitched in to clean up both days, washing dishes, wiping benches, vacuuming and organising the kitchen, before we finished with a kick of the footy in the park. We’re so proud of the skills and independence everyone is building each week. šŸ’™šŸ’š

A great afternoon out at the Auburn Botanic Gardens 🌸

Steve and Bill headed to the Auburn Botanic Gardens. They started in the Japanese Garden, which was absolutely beautiful. Steve was keen to explore every corner, and plenty of photos were taken šŸ“ø

From there, they wandered over to the Rose Garden and the Reflection Pond, where you can see yourself looking back in the water. Steve took the lead and picked out some fun tracks to wander down. One of his tracks led them to the kids’ play area, so they made sure they stopped in on the way out. They also found a little animal area with kangaroos, wombats and peacocks 🦘🦚

They wrapped up the trip with a Chinese dinner on the way home šŸ˜‹

Swipe through for highlights from our three-day respite weekend at Breakaway! šŸ“ø

Respite weekends are about more than a change of scenery. They give our participants the chance to spend time with friends, try new things and work towards their personal goals in a supportive setting, while giving families a well-earned break.

We brought our crew together at Breakaway, and the highlight was our Disco House Party. We wanted the party to belong to the participants, so we did it with them rather than for them. They planned the menu, shopped for the groceries, decorated the house, ran the disco lights and smoke machine, and cooked homemade pizzas, pasta and beef ragu, with meals tailored to everyone’s tastes and dietary needs. The night was full of music, dancing and laughter, and around it we fitted in rugby, basketball, the movies and the arcade.

None of this happens without a team, so thank you to our support workers for the energy and care they brought this weekend. Who knew you had those hidden dance moves? Haha! And to our participants, thank you for making it a weekend to remember. We can’t wait for the next one. šŸ’™

Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

Here’s the reality. An estimated 1.3 billion people live with some form of disability. That’s 16% of the world’s population, or 1 in 6 of us, and for many of them the disability isn’t visible. It’s also the largest minority group in the world, and anyone can join it at any time. Only 17% of people with disability were born with it, so most acquire it later in life.

It also shapes everyday life in ways people don’t always realise. People with disability find inaccessible and unaffordable transport 15 times more difficult than people without. There are also around 240 million children living with disability globally.

That’s why Invisible Disabilities Week exists. Held 18 to 24 October 2026 and led by the Invisible Disabilities Association, it’s a chance to raise awareness of conditions that can’t be seen, challenge the assumption that someone has to look unwell to be unwell, and encourage more understanding and acceptance.

So don’t judge by appearances, and don’t ask someone to prove it. Give a bit of patience, understanding and time. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is one simple way people can choose to show they may need extra support, so if you see one, be kind.

Tuesday Cooking Program šŸ³ What a delicious day in the kitchen!

Our participants started the morning by cooking their own breakfasts, with omelettes and fried eggs made with growing independence and confidence.

Then it was time for the big cook-up:
Homemade butter chicken
Naan bread, rolled and fried from scratch
Chicken nuggets, minced, shaped and crumbed by hand
Fluffy rice
Apple crumble slice for dessert

Along the way, everyone practised real-life kitchen skills: measuring, mixing, peeling, safe knife skills, using kitchen appliances, and food hygiene. After lunch the team pitched in to clean up by scrubbing benches, organising cupboards, vacuuming and taking out the rubbish. 🧽

We finished the day planning food and activities for this weekend, with everyone sharing their ideas. Bring on the disco on Saturday night! šŸ‘
