H5N1 avian influenza (H5 bird flu) has caused widespread mortality among wild birds, poultry, and some mammals overseas.
The NSW Government has established a comprehensive response plan and is supporting Western Australia in containing and eradicating H5 bird flu in the shortest possible time.
The NSW Government is urging the public to look out for sick or dead wild birds, particularly in coastal areas. If you do see sick or dead wild birds:
AVOID: handling the birds as there is a risk that it could affect humans
RECORD: take photos or videos and record the location

If you’re ever unsure which species an eID device is designed for, just check the NLIS ID printed on the tag. The secret is in the 10th digit - that’s where the species code lives! 🐑🐐
Here’s what each letter means:

▪️ T = Sheep post‑breeder (pink tags)
▪️ K = Goat breeder
▪️ L = Goat post‑breeder (pink tags)

🤖 Artificial intelligence tools can be useful for finding general information about farming, w**ds, livestock or soil health.
But they don’t know your property, your soil type, your rainfall patterns or the seasonal conditions you’re dealing with right now.
🌏 Advice that works in another country or even another region of Australia may not work on your land.
The NSW Government’s Local Land Services team live and work in the communities they support. They understand the local landscape and can help tailor advice to your property.

What a brilliant day out in Richmond for our water, soil and savings advanced workshop! 🥬☀️
Local field vegetable growers joined us, along with Umberto Calvo (AHR), and Brian Thomson (Porosity Agricultural Services) to dig deep into cabbage irrigation and soil health.
From checking out the 2-year soil wealth trial results to a live field walk looking at soil moisture probes in action, it was fantastic to see everyone talking shop and looking at ways to boost productivity.
The key takeaways from the day:
🌿 Digging into the data: we looked at how improving soil porosity and biology keeps moisture where it matters, boosting infiltration and crop yields.
🌿 Work smarter, not harder: a live look at scheduling tools showed just how much water and fertiliser growers can save by monitoring soil moisture closely.
🌿 Keen for change: a massive 100% of surveyed participants walked away planning to make at least one practice change to their soil and irrigation management!
