We deliver measurement policy, science and regulation for a fair, safe, healthy and competitive Australia. The National Measurement Institute (NMI), a division of the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, is Australia’s leading authority on measurement. We help ensure accuracy in everything from food and environmental testing to forensic analysis of sports and illicit drugs, and retail trade. This year's theme, Shared vision for a better world: Affordable and Clean Energy, highlights the important role standards play in creating safe, reliable and efficient energy systems.

How can measurement science support safer communities across the Asia-Pacific?

NMI scientists explored this question at the Asia Pacific Food Analysis Network PT6 Workshop in Perth that ran from 30 September to 2 October.

Martin Bernard and Annalee Morrison shared NMI research and expertise across 3 important areas:

✅️ detecting emerging PFAS compounds
✅️ screening alcoholic drinks to improve safety
✅️ developing genomic tools to support the authentication, traceability and Indigenous stewardship of Kakadu plum.

The workshop brought together regional partners, including delegates from Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) who have worked with NMI to strengthen laboratory testing capability.

By improving testing and laboratory capability across the region, this work helps strengthen food safety, detect harmful contaminants and support faster responses to public health risks that can impact Australians at home and abroad.

🌏 That's a wrap on the International Clean Up Conference 2026.

A big thank you to the organisers for putting together a fantastic event and to everyone who stopped by to chat with the National Measurement Institute Australia team.

Throughout the event, we shared ideas, learned from experts across the industry and had some great conversations about environmental testing, PFAS and the challenges facing our environment.

Whether it's a bag of pet food or livestock feed, Australians deserve to get exactly what they pay for.

That's why National Measurement Institute Australia will conduct a national audit of animal and pet supply businesses from 14 to 18 September.

Inspectors will visit businesses across Australia to check:

✅ measuring equipment
✅ package labels and markings
✅ products sold by weight, volume or count
✅ sales practices, including online sales

The audit will have a strong focus on regional livestock suppliers, where accurate measurement plays an important role in supporting farmers and regional businesses.

Congratulations to Dr Ajit Dash from Diraq Pty Ltd and UNSW, winner of the 2026 Measurement Achievement Encouragement Award and People’s Choice Award.

Dr Dash earned this recognition for research that could change how the world measures electric current. His work helped develop a new quantum current standard using commercially manufactured semiconductor technology, creating a more practical way to realise the ampere, the international unit for electric current.

This breakthrough shows how measurement science can solve real-world problems and drive innovation. By turning cutting-edge quantum research into practical tools, Dr Dash's work has the potential to benefit research, industry and the wider community.

This award recognises emerging talent in measurement science and celebrates early to mid-career professionals who are already making a strong contribution through their work.

On receiving the award, Dr Dash said:

“I am deeply honoured to receive the Measurement Achievement Encouragement and People’s Choice Award. This recognition reflects the collaborative effort behind our quantum current standard project. The quantum world has much to offer us. It is governed by universal laws of nature, providing a foundation for measurements we can trust in the products, services and research we rely on every day.”

Congratulations to Mr Glenn Ross from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, winner of the 2026 NMI Measurement Impact Award.

This award recognises measurement work that makes a real difference. Mr Ross was recognised for helping ensure Australia’s ozone measurements are accurate, reliable and internationally comparable.

His work supports the operation of Australia’s only standard reference photometer for ground-level ozone, linking national measurements to global standards. The achievement strengthens confidence in air quality data and supports better environmental monitoring, policy decisions and public health outcomes.

On receiving the award, Mr Ross said:

"Accurate air quality data is fundamental to protecting community health and the environment. I am proud to have contributed to this important work alongside an exceptional team over many years. I am honoured to receive this National Measurement Award that I share with my colleagues who have each played an important role in our collective success."

🏅 Congratulations to Professor Julio Soria from University, recipient of the 2026 Barry Inglis Medal.

Professor Soria was recognised for helping researchers better understand and measure complex fluid flows. His pioneering work has transformed how researchers measure and understand complex fluid flows, helping to advance aerospace, energy and industrial technologies.

This is one of Australia’s top honours in measurement science. It recognises sustained work that has made a real difference to research, industry and the community.

On receiving the award, Professor Soria said:

“It's a privilege to receive the 2026 Barry Inglis Medal for Sustained Contribution to Australian Metrology. Measuring turbulent flows better is how we come to understand them — that's been the guiding idea of my career, and of the Laboratory for Turbulence Research in Aerospace and Combustion at Monash University, which I founded and am privileged to direct. This recognition belongs as much to the many talented students and colleagues who've shared that pursuit with me as it does to me. There's still much left to measure in turbulent flows.”
